Stability and safety in Turkey
Hello! I've got a trip planned to western Turkey in about 11 weeks, and want to get some feedback from other travelers or residents in that part of the world. My inclination is to proceed as planned, despite the recent bombings in Istanbul. It's so difficult to accurately gauge the situation and legitimate threat simply through the news. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

You may find the later part of this thread helpful:

I usually check the UK Foreign Office travel advisory if I have doubts about a destination (less alarmist than the US version):

I was there the day of the attacks.
I was confortably working in my hotel. My wife asked me not to go back to Istanbul... However attacks happen everywhere now and well... I risked more my wife in a taxi in India.

Yes, you can't predict terrorist attacks and they can happen anywhere. But now there's also he risk of another coup attempt, and that's more dangerous than a terrorist attack because it can affect the whole country.

I've been living in Turkey for some 15 years. Of course such attacks happen. But I am safer here than when I lived in the Washington DC area. I said this on another thread... statistically, you have more chance of dying during your car ride to and from the airport. Terrorists hit targets they know will make the news. So we will be shocked when it happens. But compared to the more mundane ways in which thousands, millions of people die, we hardly notice them. Looking at it realistically, you may just be safer during your visit to Turkey than you would be going about your normal daily life where you now live.

My friend is from Izmir and used to go there each summer vacation to visit her relatives. Now, she has stopped these visits. She says, she will not travel again to Turkey in the current situation.
Terrorist attacks are one thing. The other is that a civil war can break out every minute.

with the whole word beckoning, why go somewhere, aside from bravado statistics, where you might be less than comfortable? Not to mention that your family and friends would be also very uneasy about your travel to such a destination.
Two of my grandsons (musicians) and their Ventura-based band were on two tours of Western Europe (notably, France, Belgium and Italy) the past two years. They arrived home just a few days before the Paris massacre where another US traveling band was actually under attack...old Grandpa here had a few anxious moments as did all of their other loved ones and friends here at home. Same for their most recent tour last month.
We loved a very peaceful Turkey (on the surface, anyway), driving everywhere for a month, back in 1995....also a year earlier while I was doing some covert work with the Turkish Airforce.
They say that the plains of North Dakota are safe!
