St. Remy Hotel
Any opinions on Chateau des Alpilles versus Hostellerie du Vallon de Valrugues in St. Remy?
|
We stayed at Valrugues for 3 nights in may. The rooms are a little worn but the property is very nice, the pool is beautiful, and the restaurant was exceptional. It is a short walk into town from the hotel. We also stayed one night at Le Image, which is right in the center of town, and it too was an exceptional property. It is very modern, completely different than Valrugues, but worth checking out. Cheers, Al

I haven't stayed in either of those places, but we just got back from France and stayed just outside of St. Rémy at the Maison de Bournissac and loved it. I'd call it "rustic luxury"- no ornate furnishings or heavy fabrics, but all the comforts. And the restaurant was great!
It's just a few minutes drive from St. Rémy, so we drove into town every day, but enjoyed staying in a quiet spot outside of town. I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in or not, but you might check it out. http://www.rudymaxa.com/article.php?ArticleID=25 http://www.lamaison-a-bournissac.com/ |
We stayed 4 nights at Mas De Carassins in early July...a 10 minute walk to town. I would highly recommend it.
cheers, CC |
Another good hotel in the general area is the Domaine de Valmouriane. Very Provençal in feel, nice rooms and baths, good restaurant, gorgeous pool and grounds.

Chateau des Alpilles is beautiful in what we call shabby chic but that was some time ago. I liked it the way it was. Your drive through a beautiful alleé. there are enormous cypres trees
There's also an annex. The main house is prferable. |
Cigalechanta, I hope for the price it is not 'too' shabby. That's where I'm considering staying. The tree-lined lane wowed me. Should I do more research? St. Remy is to be one of my trip highlights.

No. I think you will love it. It has been, I'm told looking lovely.

I stayed at the Ch. des Alpilles for about 2 weeks a few years ago. My room was quite large..in the picture it is on the upper floor with the balcony over the front door. Lovely spot.

Hi doc:
We loved the chateau des Alpilles when we were there 2 years ago. In fact, we returned last year for a few nights. It has a lovely feel to it. The location is ideal. It's less than a mile out of the village on a pretty country road. A few times we walked into the village and bought some lovely brioches and pain de chocolate, cheeses and fruit. We then went to a cafe where we ordered juice and coffee and people-watched. The hotel has a pool which we enjoyed at the end of the day. You have the feel of Provence there. The village hosts a very nice market on Wednesdays and a small one on Saturday. You can walk to the Roman ruins and to the hospital where Van Gogh recuperated outside the village. Enjoy! |
Another vote for Le Mas des Carassins. Be sure to check it out before you decide (http://www.avignon-et-provence.com/h...-carassins/gb/). Easy walk to town, fantastic accomodations and grounds, friendly service. Our stay of five nights was great.

We stayed at Domaine de Valmouriane just outside of town. It was really beautiful and the owner was very, very nice (from Scotland, I believe). It was on the road to Les Baux, which was convenient for us because we headed in that direction a few times. I would definitely stay there again.

Cigalechanta and others -- thanks for your encouragement on Chateau de Alpilles. I had forgotten someone said they could actually walk to the village from there.

hopetotravel and doc, you didn't say when but St Remy has a festival of Painters , usually each year around the 7th-8th 0f September throught the first week of October. I have two posters I have framed but have run out of wall space. The main streets will be lined with the exibits and sales.
|
They also had an art festival during the first week of June when we there this year. there must have been 200 artists exhibiting their wares along the streeets. Cheers, Al

Does anyone know if the Festival of Painters will be on the week of October 4 this year?
