Hi,
Does anyone know what has happened to the Chateau de Roussan. The web page is gone and the phone is out of service. I've stayed there almost every year for the past 20 years and am very sad to think that it might have closed. Does anyone know? Thanks.

I did send an email to the tourist bureau and hope to hear back from them tomorrow. I really hope that they haven't closed. It is truly a great place to stay, authentic and beautiful gardens and a lovely walk into St. Remy.It's heart breaking to think of it being gone. I am hoping that they are just on holiday until April!

Hi bcmaggir; I hope the chateau you stayed at is still viable. BUT if not, you could consider a chateau in St Remy that we have stayed at, called 'Le Chateau des Alpilles'. We had six people there and everyone loved it. ENJOY Iris

We stayed Chateau les Alpilles in April 2005 and loved it also.

When I googled it said they ran out of thier site licence on March 3d : it may be reissued or deleted.

We stayed at Chateau des Alpilles last summer and loved it. Great location, great food.

Please forgive my stepping in here. I'm looking for an excellent place to stay in St Remy also, so the post caught my eye.
I"m hoping that knowledgeable folks may be able to make some comparisons for me between Alpilles and the Mas des Carassins. I checked both on Trip Advisor and so many posts don't speak to the aspects of accommodations that mean most to us.
I.e. most people talk about the hosts or the grounds (gardens, pool, etc) or the public rooms. And almost all the photos are of those things also. We care about that, of course, but the individual accommodations-- one's own room and bathroom-- are perhaps even more important to us.
In one of the photos of Alpilles, it shows a very high tub-- no separate shower. We aren't bath people, much prefer showers, and absolutely don't like the kind of set-up where water goes all over the floor if one tries to "shower" in the tub. I wonder if there are showers in any of the rooms at either of these places. Also: would love to hear what the bedrooms are like: any king size beds? What's the quality of the mattresses and linens? Are the rooms and bathrooms a good size?
And perhaps the most impt question of all for us-- is the place very quiet?

Keeping in mind that it's been 3 years since we stayed at Chateau des Alpilles, my DH still says it was his favorite.

I believe it is owned by 2 American women. The bedroom decor (and linens) was lovely.

The bathroom was also, and had a big shuttered window. We were in a corner room. I think I do remember getting the floor wet when I washed my hair in the shower, but I have also not perfected the art of using those European showers. Yet, the bathroom was so huge.

Also, we stayed in April and I don't know if that would affect how quiet it was, but it was some ways back from the road.

I had a wonderful stay at chateau de roussan a few years ago. It will be very sad if it's closed. It did seem they were letting it get run down, if you trust the reviews on tripadvisor.

It's a stunning property. I hope that someone will turn it into the place it should be (and that I can still afford it!)

Sory about the Charueau de Roussan...we stayed there a few times in the early 90's...funky but fun and great surroundings...amd the classic, long, tree-lined driveway. Stopped in for a look in '06 but it appeared even more run down.

Choice between the Mas and the Alpilles, looks like the rates are well over $300 at the latter, and in the high 200's at the Mas.

The Mas was booked when we were last in St. R in '06, so we opted for the very plain and simple "Villa Glanum", on the road leading south out of town, directly across the highway from the sanitarium where Van Gogh spent a year (nice place to visit), and literally next door to Glanum (extensive Roman ruins)...the hotel has a pool and a lot of acreage,olive tree grove, cottage rooms are tidy, quite large with good-sized shower/bathrooms.... Restaurant specializing in Italian food. Rates about $130+). Utilitarian, but comfortable and fitting for the purpose...certainly nothing fancy.

Threee minute drive into St. R, can also be walked.

I actually doubt if they are just on vacation, as their website is gone, and people don't usually shut down phone service for that reason. They aren't listed in the French yellow pages any more, either. Even if they did close down their phone service for a few months, I don't think they'd delete their yellow pages listing or drop their website. well, it's a small enough town that the tourist office ought to know what's up.

I just heard from the former manager of the Chateau Roussan. She has left the place as the owners have taken it back. They may reopen as a hotel but that is uncertain. Too bad as this place was one of a kind. I liked that it was unkempt and sort of elegantly going to seed but ever so charming. Authentic is the word; something that is getting more and more difficult to find. The Alpilles is a beautiful spot and you will be well taken care of there. Also St, Remy is a wonderful town and close to other villages for interesting day trips.
