St. Peter's Tomb

I was wondering if anyone had luck obtaining tickets from the Vatican's Excavation Office for the tour of St. Peter's Tomb. I e-mailed the Vatican back in March and received an automated response, but nothing since. We'll be in Rome in July so I understand getting in may be difficult. Any suggestions?

Thought I'd repost....any suggestions please?

We did the tour last year and received an email reply with our assigned time in about a week. Probably since it is the busy tourist season they are either swamped or the tours are full. I'd email them again or try a phone call. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. You do realize that the tour includes all the excavations under St. Peter's Cathedral -- not just the spot where Peter's bones are located? You get lots of history on this tour. And Peter's bones are in a small box about 50 feet away from where you stand, so it's not like a huge tomb that you can get right up next to. It is still a moving experience and well worth the time.

Have you seen the site below? They give a fax number at the bottom. I'd fax them mentioning the previous email. Lots of good info here:

Hi skiobx, I think you might still have some time to wait for a reply. I requested tickets in March and got confirmation on May 8, for June 22.

Search this forum for "scavi" and you will get lots of info.

Wow, thanks everybody!!!

skiobx
I sent a fax after waiting for three months for their response. One week later I got my confirmation number for late June.
Why don't you try and send a fax?
Good luck!

Just a follow-up. I received Scavi ticket confirmation for our July trip. Unfortunately, they did not include tickets for our 13 and 11 y.o. A little disappointing since the Vatican website says children over 11 OK with parental supervision. So, I'm just deciding whether to go alone and let the boys have some free time without me (which they'll probably love!!) or just forfeit. Thanks everyone for your help.

Same thing happened to a few of us with kids under 16. They should really update their website.

I was lucky enough to get my offer of tickets for July 3 on May 24 (after having e-mailed my request in February).

I immediately e-mailed my credit card info, but have still not received any confirmation that they did receive it.

I have now e-mailed them 2 more times asking them to confirm, but still I have received nothing, and my credit card appears to not have been charged yet,

I find the system very frustrating, and fear that if nothing continues to happen (ie no confirmation and no cc charge), I may have no other alternative but to show up 30 minutes before the scheduled tour, armed with copies of all of my e-mails, and hope for the best.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Nevertoold, Don't panic!

It took the Ufficio Scavi around 10 days to charge my credit card and send me a confirmation; there is plenty of time for you to get the confirmation.

I know dealing with the Ufficio Scavi is not easy - dealing with the Vatican Museums'

Ooops, pressed wrong key...

Dealing with the Vatican Museums' guided visits office is even worse - their policy is not to confirm until one week in advance - but I would like to put in a word for the Scavi: As far as I can tell, all - ALL! - requests are dealt with by two people. I received my confirmation on a Sunday; it was sent from the HOME e-mail address of one of them.

Sending e-mail after e-mail risks creating more confusion than satisfaction.

Have a bit of patience...

Thanks Eloise - will do, and will report.

Eloise - you were right.

I just received my confirmation re: deposit.

Good advice.

Nevertoold,

Delighted to hear it! All's well that ends well.
