St Peters Basilica

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows if St Peters Basilica is open on Januray 1st for visitors. I know the Vatican museums and mostly eveything else will be closed, but I can't get a clear answer on the Basilica. If anyone has any info. on this, I would be greatful. Thanks

It will probably be opened..but I don't think it will be on their regular schedule. The pope appears at the window on January 1st with a New Years message and blessing broadcasted worldwide..so the Piazza is really crowded. Maybe they open after the blessing, I don't know.

My guess is yes. And since itīs a holyday there should be services in there, and the Pope should issue the "urbi et orbi" blessing to the people gathered in St Peters Sq.

The pope says mass in St. Peter's Basilica the morning of January 1 (at 10:00 a.m. in 2007). It's very unlikely that the church will be open for visitors before the mass.

It will probably be open after the noon blessing.
