St Moritz to Rome - via Zurich or Milan? Flight or Train?
We are leaving St Moritz on 18 Dec going to Rome. I can either train from SM to Zurich then fly to Rome as it is very easy from the Zurich station to go to airport. Problem is flight out of Zurich very expensive for 5 of us. Next option is to take Bernina Express and reach Milan. Here I have 2 options but both not ideal: First, go to Milan airport and fly to Rome (too much travelling with luggages and may not save much time compared to train). Second, connect Eurostar train once we get into Milan Station. ( Too much time spent in train the whole day). I have also contemplated taking night train from either Zurich or Milan into Rome but not sure if it is comfortable. Besides, we have to pay for the 6th couchette if we want privacy so the cost is also quite high. Any idea how to get from SM to Rome taking alternative route from the ones I planned? We do not want to spend overnight in any of the cities . We want to get from SM to Rome in shortest possible time , Any help? Thank you in advance.

The fastest route I could find from St. Moritz to Rome
take the bus to Chiavenna Take regional train to Colico Take the train to Milan Take the train to Rome It's all about 9 hours. You could drive back to Zürich and catch a plane from there. It would be faster but not as scenic. You'd save about 2 hours. |
I'd take the fnatastic Bernina Express from SM to Tirano and connect for Milan. A wonderful journey!
No-one flies from Milan to Rome any more, flying takes 4 hours of hassle with just 1 of those 4 in the actual plane. The new high-speed line with an hourly train means a 3 hour 30 minute journey time city centre to city centre by train, more time to put your feet up, stress free. www.trenitalia.com (if it'll accept your credit card, many it doesn't) or www.raileurope.com. |
Hi chchtrain,
Another vote for the Bernina Express, to my mind the most scenic of the "scenic" trains! s |
Thanks. How about Zurich to Rome by night train? Do they have a connecting room where a 3 bedded room connecting to a 2 bedded room?

I would not recommend the night train from Zurich to Rome! It's more expensive than a flight. I live in Rome and i go to Zurich very often to visit my sister who lives there. The best and cheapest thing to do is to take a train from Zurich to Basel (only takes an hour and trains run every half hour or so) and then take an EasyJet low cost flight to Rome Ciampino.

The night trains from Switzerland to Rome are being withdrawn as from 13 December 2009, sadly.
Just do the Bernina Express then take the high-speed trains from Milan to Rome. You won't regret it! |
Take the train...beautiful jounrney and so much less hassle than flying!
