Where is St. John's Wood in London? I read that it is a pleasant area for lunch or a stroll? True?

Used to live there for a while many years ago. It's a well-to-do residential area with large Victorian houses with substantial Jewish population. Also its proximity to Regent's Park mosque has made it popular for wealthy Arabs. (They seem to get on well together.)<BR>There's isn't a great deal to do for visitors. On the southern edge is Lord's Cricket Ground, and nearby is the handsome Georgian St John's Wood Parish Church. It borders on Swiss Cottage to the north, where there are some good hotels and restaurants.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Abbey Road, (street and studios) a major feature in St Johns Wood. <BR><BR>The main shopping street (St Johns Wood High St) is quite pleasant. Did some celeb spotting once at the Cafe Rouge branch there. Very nice area.

It's not really a tourist area, nor is it especially nice. It's a very up market residential area (strangely popular with the japanese).<BR><BR>If you're in that neck of the woods and looking for lunch and a stroll, go to Hampstead. Much nicer.

The reason for its popularity among the Japanese is its proximity to one of Japanese Schools in Regents Park and the fact that their houses are mostly rented by their companies from Jewish landlords, as in Finchley and Hendon.

So skip St. Johns Wood and head to Hampstead Heath and Highgate for a peek at Victrian London? I also saw the phrase &quot;Victorian Squares&quot; used in association with Russell &amp; Bloombury Squares. Any other areas?

If you are of a certain age and were a Beatle's fan, the famous Abbey Road street crossing (from the album cover) is a three-block straight walk southwest on Grove End Road from the St John’s Wood tube station.

If you're REALLY a Beatles fan, take one of the Beatles Walking Tours - such as one from London Walks - <BR><BR>http://london.walks.com/<BR>(or try directly http://six.clicksimple.co.uk/index.a...ContentID=#158 )<BR><BR><BR>The tours (I took one in September 2000) are led by a Beatle nut and author of at least one book about them; you get to see lots of sites in London where the Beatles did this or that, and one of the tours ends up at Abbey Road.<BR><BR>Andrew<BR>
