St. Goarshausen ferry question
 

Trying to figure out how to take the K-D cruise from Bacharach to Braubach to see the Marksburg castle then catch the train back to St. Goar to visit Rheinfels Castle in one day. It looks like the best plan is to go all the way to Bacharach and visit Marksburg and have a picnic. Then we would have to catch a train to St. Goarshausen and get off and take the ferry across the river to St. Goar. I can't find a train that will go direct from Braubach to St. Goar without involving a bus ride to Koblenz then a train back down to St. Goar. All I can figure is that it has to do with different sides of the river. So, can a pedestrian take the ferry...without a car? How far is it from the St. Goarshausen train station to the ferry? Can we walk in a short amount of time? Looking for Rhine experts to help me out please.

Not an expert -- but sounds like you've it already.

Trains run along both sides of the Rhine, and you can cross at specific designated points. The walk between the train station and the ferry at St. Goarshausen will be very short, and you can take it.

But experts will correct me if I'm incorrect. (I don't think that I took that ferry.)

K-D may stop at both St. Goar and St. Goarshausen also? I'm not sure about it, but K-D posts schedules online.

Yes, K-D stops at both St. Goar and St. Goarshausen but we are only going one-way towards Braubach. We are not going to take K-D back from Braubach to Bacharach via St. Goar as the boat schedule won't allow us to see both castles in one day. So cruise up and train down to save time. Appreciate the info on the train station and ferry point. Know where I might locate a map of St. Goarshausen?

Foot passengers can certainly take this ferry - never seen one in Germany that doesn't take pedestrians and bikes as well as cars. Some river ferries are indeed 'personal ferries' that only ferry pedestrians and cyclists across the river. there is one like this linking Bingen and Rudesheim i believe.

Yes, there's a ferry that crosses the Rhine further south (my mom and I used it as we stayed in Ruedesheim), but BabsB is further north.

Now, BabsB, you'd better not trust me completely about the train and ferry distance (I do think that I'm right). :-)

I don't see one for St. Goarshausen, but there's one for St. Goar. There's also one on Loreley. I looked there and I don't see a map for S. Goarshausen. But maybe if you look a little more closely you can find one.

I seem to recall that St. Goarshausen is very small? Maybe that's why there's no map?

There're some experts here who can help.

Both towns are small - 111op must be right - it can't be far. Seems as though i read in a post here that KD boats at times don't stop at St Goarshausen because of water levels?

But I'm pretty sure that there's a separate ferry that does the crossing at that point of the Rhine (I just didn't use it). But I remember facing the same questions because I thought about going to Marksburg (we didn't go in the end).

Anyway, as I said, I'm not 100% sure about this as I was only there once last October, so please don't yell at me if I've given out incorrect info.

WOW, you are both great. I pulled up the site you provided 111op and it had a link to a Loreley tourist site. It has a map of the river with both towns on it and the train stations indicated. Yeah! St. Goarshausen is tiny compared to St. Goar so looks like the walk and connection will be easy. I feel pretty comfortable now with our first days itinerary, thanks again.

The ferry's web site is www.rheinschiffahrt-goar.de. There is a picture, timetable and fares (foot passengers are 1.20 euros one-way).

GeoffHammer, thanks for the web-site. I speak no German (gotta get to work on that) but it is pretty intuitive. Really liked the old time pics.

We stayed in an apartment in St. Goar in June 2005. The ferry to St Goarshausen stop was just across the street from our apartment and we watched it many times from our window. We did take it across one day. It went every 15 minutes and it took 3-5 minutes to cross the Rhine depending which direction your were going.
