Anne
A friend of mine stayed there in '95 (I believe its the same place-they had a doorman with a top hat/coat out front)and it looked nice (I did not see the rooms though) and she was happy enough.
The lobby looked nice but that was all I saw-we were in a hurry to see the sights. That's all the info. I have.
Hope that helps a bit.

I'm addicted to the St. Giles. The rooms are small, but. . .breakfast included is great. . .service was excellent, and it's the best for location. Next to British Museum, Oxford St., and half block from Tottenham Ct tube, , a blessing in the winter. It's on Bedford Court.

Anne, St. Giles has a lovely lobby but not much else. Rooms are VERY SMALL. When we stayed there in 98 our room had one very small window that only opened a few inches and had a view of roof-tops. The breakfast that was included was so-so. I took one bite of a sausage and tasted it all day.

my first trip to london, and i remember the st. giles. my sister and i went in 1996. they just renovated the cafeteria. warning now: the room is not american size standard, and comfy-tight for two people. if you're not too claustrophobic the shower stall can be a surprise. are you doing the package tour through british airway? that's what my sister and i did. if you're willing, you can take the subway to the hotel, it's a little tricky, but not impossible.
good luck!!

Rather than spend the high rates for the St Giles, go around the corner on Bloomsbury street to the Morgan Hotel for a better deal. Nice hotel, family owned and operated. Rooms are also small (typcial for London) but very nicely done up and comfortable. Great breakfast cooked to order by owner. No lobby, you are given key to front door and come and go as you please. This is a hotel that I have used many times and never been disappointed in quality or service. The address and phone info:
Morgan Hotel,
24 Bloomsbury St, Wc1, London.
