St. Andrews to Glamis

For anyone familiar with Fife and Angus...I have gotten several different directions from different route planners for St. Andrews to Glamis castle. Could you tell me if these look good? Thanks! 1 Depart on A917 North Street for 0.2 miles 0 miles (0 km) step1 2 Continue straight ahead onto A915 Pilmour Links for 0.2 miles 0.2 miles (0.4 km) step2 3 Bear left onto A91 for 3.6 miles 0.4 miles (0.7 km) step3 4 Take 2nd exit at the roundabout onto A919 Main Street for 2.8 miles 4 miles (6.4 km) step4 5 Continue straight ahead onto A914 for 0.4 miles 6.8 miles (10.9 km) step5 6 Bear left for 1.6 miles 7.2 miles (11.6 km) step6 7 Continue straight ahead onto A92 Five Roads Roundabout for 6.4 miles 8.8 miles (14.1 km) step7 8 Take 2nd exit at the roundabout onto A972 Kingsway East for 1.1 miles 15.1 miles (24.4 km) step8 9 Bear left onto A929 Forfar Road for 1.1 miles 16.3 miles (26.2 km) step9 10 Take 2nd exit at the roundabout onto A90 for 3.8 miles 17.4 miles (27.9 km) step10 11 Turn left onto A928 for 5.3 miles 21.2 miles (34.1 km) step11 12 Turn right onto A94 for 0 miles 26.4 miles (42.5 km) step12 13 Turn left onto A928 Dundee Road for 1.3 miles 26.5 miles (42.6 km) step13 14 Bear right for 0.7 miles 27.7 miles (44.7 km) step14 15 Arrive at your destination for 0 miles 28.4 miles (45.8 km) step15

Those types of web directions make me crazy. How could anyone follow them with .2's and 3.3's (what if your rantal car has larger tyres and the odometer is incorrect?) Couldn't be easier - St Andrews toward Dundee on the A92 (main road), follow the Dundee Ring road through several roundabouts looking for the A929 (you will be on the A92 but the A929 will be in parentheses, indicating you are not on it but are headed toward it) towards Forfar. Just past Todhills turn left onto the A928 signposted Glamis. Tourist/historic sites (like Glamis) will be have a brown road sign so you really can't miss them (other directional road signs are white or green)

Let me make it even easier and suggest one change. follow signposts from St Andrews to Sundee, then from Dundee to Forfar. 12 miles north of Dundee you will see signs to Forfar on your right. Take the next left (A94), signposted to Perth. Glamis is 5 1/2 miles along and you can't miss the castle.

Thanks Janis and Sheila! This does not bode well for the rest of the directions I've printed out--as I used either AA or Multimap for all of our stops, and there are many! At least The St. Andrews to Glamis route will be easy!

Ani: I would probably chuck all those fancy directions you have printed out. Buy a UK road atlas ( 4 miles to the inch is a good scale) and mark out your routes in highlighter so the navigator can easily read them in a moving car. The drive from St Andrews is very straightforward and just look how complicated your instructions make it seem. Some of your drives would be 100 X more complicated if you tried following that gobbledygook. One BIG problem you will have - some places like the short trip around Dundee on the way to Glamis involves several roudabouts - which couldn't be easier. Even when you are just going straight through the circle, the directions make it sound like a major turn or change. Plus - many roads in the UK change names every few miles (or blocks in a city). So while you are just driving along on the same road, the directions make you think you are turning on to a different one (when it is just the name that changed) The key is for the navigator to look ahead on the map for towns along the road you want. In the case of Glamis that might be Forfar - so when you see a sign to Forfar you'll know that is the one you want.

Couldn't agree more with the suggestion to pick up one of those 4 miles/inch UK road atlases. I bought one when I picked up my rental car and it was basically all I needed to get around the UK. For the most part the road signs are excellent (much better than in the US), and you plot your trip on the atlas and you're on your way. For some trips I had the AA directions printed out and we found it worked to use a combination of the AA directions and the atlas.
