St. Andrews golf course
Hi!
We are staying in St. Andrews near the golf courses after we visit Paris. What is the best, (fastest and economical) way to get there from plane from Paris. So far I got: take the train from Gare De Lyon to Charles de Gaulle Airport and fly into Edinburgh. What airport in Scotland should we fly into, and from there how do we get to the center of town in St. Andrews? Thanks so much! Dreaming Europe |
You do not seem to have done very much research yourself. The airport you request is Edinburgh and to get to St. Andrews, you can rent a car at the airport,or go into Edinburgh and take the train or bus. Don't expect to get to play golf on the Old Course unless you have made a booking months ago.

A little bit harsh almcd. The only practical option is to fly to EDI from Paris on Air France or EasyJet. Ideally pick up a hire car at EDI and drive up to StA (approx 1 hour), or longer if you want to take the scenic route via the Fife coast.
If you really don't want to drive yourself there are several airport car services operating out of StA that will collect you (an expensive option though). Otherwise, get yourself by bus/laxi to Edinburgh Haymarket station and take the train the Leuchars, followed by local bus/taxi into St Andrews. |
Thank you Gordon! And yes, almcd- This IS my research...
Thank you for the help :) We do not expect to play on the old course. |
It should be fun to see the Old Course even if you don't play it!
Can't help you with the plane because I took the train and then a taxi from Leuchars. The town is lovely and we enjoyed their lovely B&Bs. |
If you want to see the Old Course, best to go on a Sunday. There is no play on Sundays and it sort of becomes a big city park and you can wander w/o having to duck incoming golf balls :)

Fly from Orly to Dundee then take the bus
http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUplo...%20Fife%20.pdf From Edinburgh, take the 747 bus to Ferrytoll then X58/59/60 to St Andrews http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUplo...-Jet%20747.pdf http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUplo...%20Fife%20.pdf http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUplo...%20Fife%20.pdf |
Alan - I don't think there is any such (direct) flight to Dundee from Orly... AFAIK EDI is the only way to go.

" I don't think there is any such (direct) flight to Dundee from Orly"
From Paris, it's possible to fly to Dundee, changing at LCY. Trouble is: from a Paris airport to Dundee airport takes about three times as long as flying to Edinburgh. And costs about three times as much. |
I didn't say it was a good option

This company runs a relatively inexpensive direct shuttle service from Edinburgh airport to St Andrews (it's mainly used by students but available to all):-

You won't get to play The Old Course but you can certainly play on the links.
The Himalayas is a famous, and favourite, putting course (each hole a taxing Par 3) set into the Old Course about half out along West Sands. So, if the weather is suitable, my suggestion - a bracing walk out along West Sands as far as Eden Point to see the seals and then turn and enjoy the best views of St.As ahead of you on your return, so far as The Himalayas. Then a short (40min) diversion amongst the hillocks and tussocks before heading off to the bar of the Russacks Marine (just over the Swilkin Burn) half away along the 1st/18th joint fairway for a glass or two of something warming. That would be a worthwhile afternoon. :) Dr D. |
