Spring Break in Europe: Where should I go?

Hello!

I'll be going to university in London this fall, and we'll have about a week off from March 15-23, 2008. I'd like to leave the UK and visit someplace new (preferably not France, Italy, or Greece) for five or so days.

I'm not very much into drinking or dancing, but I do love art and history. I'm fine with visiting just one city -- two if I'm lucky. Where do you suggest I go, and how should I get there (plane, train, boat)?

A place that has cycling opportunities is a plus, but by no means a necessity. Also, I know some French, and will hopefully have taken some Spanish classes by next March as well. Thank you so much!

Edinburgh & Glasgow - £12 or so each way from London, both have plenty of history & art (as well as drinking and dancing) and cycling is common - plus there's some rather nice countryside nearby

Hi there.I would recommend Malta (not just because I'm Maltese!)Very rich historically and easy to cover in a few days as it's a small island. Have a look here for a taster - www.visitmalta.com. Anyways enjoy wherever you go !

actually I would have recommended Edinburgh too - but you said outside of the UK.

Southern Germany is absolutely beautiful and has great bike trails. There is much to do and of course a lot of history.

Barcelona is a good choice too!

Morocco! Or Portugal or Spain.

Morocco is exotic and beautiful and a short flight from London. Your bit of French will be useful. Skip the border cities and consider Rabat, Fes or Marrakech. A trip to the desert would be great. This could be really fun if you get a friend to go with.

Amsterdam
Barcelona
Prague
all good suggestions!

Agree with the suggestions of Barcelona and Morocco (Fez or Marrakech and the desert if you can fit it in).

Morocco sounds amazing! I have a friend who might do her study abroad in France in the next year or two and she's always wanted to go to Marrakech; I think that would be a great trip for the two of us.

A lot of you are suggesting Barcelona; how is the train travel to/from other Spanish cities, or across the border to Portugal?

The romantic in me is drawn to Malta, but as for Amsterdam and Prague, I'm fearful that they'll be crawling with other students on Spring Break, and I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Southern Germany sounds beautiful! Excuse me if this is an ignorant question, but will I be able to get by on no German? My friend is teaching herself German and we were fooling around with her workbooks... my accent is absolutely horrendous!

I also forgot to say thank you to everyone who replied -- I really do appreciate it!
