Spoleto or Todi, Italy

We will be spending 3 nights in Cortona and then will move over to the Spoleto area. Any thoughts on Spoleto vs. Todi? Any other suggestions for that area are welcomed. Not Assisi (earthquake). I suppose Spoleto or Todi could have one too, but I haven't heard anything about earthquakes there.???????
Thanks in advance.

Hi, Elsa, please don't let earthquakes worry you - I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and sleep well at night. Spoleto is quite close to Assissi, but I think it is a little bit larger and easier to get around in than Todi. It is more charming, while Todi is more dramatic because of the way it sits on the top of a hill. Spoleto would also be more convenient if you want to visit other towns in Umbria. Let us know what you decide. Buon viaggio.

I loved Spoleto. We were just talking the other day about how we'd like to go back there. We stayed at a wonderful small hotel called the Gattapone which faced the gorge and the remarkable walking bridge (aquaduct). Spoleto would make a great base for visiting other places in the area, and has lots of nice restaurants.

ciao elsa

i live in the chianti, nearest florence. ca. 4 weeks ago we had an earhtquake right here (nothing happended) 3 days ago, here in the toscana we had an other earthquake. so, please don't worry about assisi. it's a lovely place and the whole region here is in an area of earthquakes (big ones and very small ones). but anyway, i was a half year ago in spoleto in a nice 3 star hotel and guess what, i can't remember the name. but it was in a quiet small road above via apollinare. and if you are there, test ristorante Apollinare in via Sant' Agata- They are in the Gambero Rosso guide for the restaurants in italy for the year 2000. we tested it and it's is really phantastic!!! they do have as well a hotel when i remember! (ah they are in the guide michelin, here we go:

Hotel Aurora
Via Apollinare 3
Spoleto

Phone: 0039 0743 220315
Fax: 0039 0743 221885

as i remember only the entrance was very nice (but on this time we had our room and couldn't change any more).

have a nice stay in umbria!

tanti saluti

some other umbrian options:
Spello: lovely little town just off ss2
Trevi: another beautiful town just off ss2
Bevagna and Montefalco: two hill towns worthy of a trip.
Umbria is the tuscany of twenty years ago. enjoy!
