spoleto or orvieto

I am debating whether to go to Spoleto or Orvieto as a side trip from Rome. I am intrigued by the underground caves at Orvieto. Has anyone been to either of these towns? They are fairly close to Rome. Or should I put in a little more effort and time and go to Assisi.

Orvieto--hands down.

Liked both very much, but Orvieto would be a winner if had to choose. I think we did the underground caves but you can probably tell by that that they did not leave a lasting impression. Orvieto is great in every way - atmosphere, shopping, cafes etc. Preferred both to Assisi - largely rebuilt and not that interesting we thought - but others love it!

Having lived in Rome recently, and having spent much time in Orvieto, I would say this: if you're not in Rome for over a week, don't leave Rome at all. You can never come to the end of this amazing city, and there are things to do in the environs, like Ostia Antica (amazing ruins, a short train ride from the center -- rivals Pompeii). But if you really want to get out of Rome in a simple way, go to Orvieto. I am a fan of Spoleto, but it's only an hour to Orvieto and it has one of the amazing cathedrals in all of Italy, as well as caves and an Etruscan well. Also great views. Walking around and eating are both better in Rome. I am also a Spoleto fan, but it's not as easy to "do" as a side trip from Rome.

Orvieto. I Sette Consoli for lunch is memorable. A block or two from the top of the funicular.

I agree with sangrail. Rome needs time, but (of the two) let me agree with others...Orvieto.
