Spoleto or Arezzo?
 

The good deal I can get on a rental car while in Tuscany only allows us to leave the car in either Arezzo or Spoleto where we'll take the train to Rome to fly home (we're avoiding driving in Florence or Rome, Siena would have been perfect but isn't an option while booking online for some reason, and we'll be in Perugia prior to touring Tuscany so don't want to backtrack). Neither Arezzo or Spoleto are on our itinerary, so we can work either in. Does one make more sense than the other? Thanks!

Geographically I would think Arezzo would work best.

Bob, I found the best price for an automatic car from Kemwel (a couple hundred $s cheaper than Autoeurope and many others I checked.) We pick up the car in Perugia, have the car for five days being based in Montalcino, then in my exhaustive check of each dropdown city on the Web site for a drop off town, Arezzo and Spoleto are the only ones that show a car available to rent at all from a city that makes sense to drop the car off on the way to Rome from Montalcino same day. All the other cities and towns that would be good to leave the car in order to get a convenient train to Rome (Siena, Orvieto, and others would have been perfect from Montalcino, I know) wouldn't allow me to book a car at all. Only the combo of Perugia/Spoleto and Perugia/Arezzo made a car available...

Spoleto is on a trainline into Rome as well, so I think it would be easy, too. Both are beautiful towns, and in some ways similar (size-wise I guess). Spoleto has a beautiful church and a wonderful location, plus a really neat bridge. If you're interested in Renaissance Italian art, Arezzo has a great series of frescoes by Piero della Francesca, and the piazza in Arezzo is quite nice, too.

From Montalcino you are going the wrong way. I am almost certain that you will be able to drop in either Orvieto or, better yet, Grosetto. Do not believe the web site--call Kemwel and work it out.

But it would mean backtracking through/past/near Perugia, which the OP doesn't want to do.

oops, you're right about the backtracking--even if Spoleto isn't next to Perugia, it would be heading back in that general direction. I guess I vote for Arezzo, then. :)

Check the time of day you want to return verses the open times of locations. I have a feeling that this is the problem. Try different times for the drop off. Chiusi would also be a great place to drop off and then catch the train to Rome.
