Split to Dubrovnik via Bosnia

Can anybody help me with some information regarding the need to have to travel through Bosnia when traveling by road from Split to Dubrovnik. I have heard that there is a 9 Km stretch of Bosnia that one has to pass through on this journey. As South African's to my knowledge we would require visas to move through this small stretch of Bosnia.

Am I correct in making the above assumptions? If so where can one obtain a visa closest to the border post? Furthermore does anybody have any ideas as to how to circumvent this whole crossing through Bosnia?

Yes you do have to travel a stretch of road in Bosnia.We are New Zealanders and don't need a visa so our passports were given a cursory glance and we were waved on.

I think you do not need a visa for Bosnia just to pass this stretch of Bosnia. There is some kind of bilateral agreement between Croatia and Bosnia on free transit traffic through Neum. I think there is a transit line at the border crossing, but if you're going by bus you do not need to worry about that. You need the same documents as for entering Croatia (identity card, passport or entry visa).

Judging by our experience on the bus as it passed through Neum (nine miles), it's a perfunctory nod by some border officials. You know, just enough to remind everyone that they're there.

We drove this road a few weeks ago. No one even bothered to look at us. We were short of time and didn't stop in Naum , Bosnia. Croatian friend told us that Bosnia is a good place for shopping and that they like to drive to take advantage of the low prices there when they drive through. You absolutely don't need a visa. Just have a passport ready in case one of the border officers wakes up and feels like looking at it.
I would just like to add a small advice. If you like seafood, stop at Ston (just before getting to the Bosnian border). Find the tiny restaurant in the old part of the sone village. And have one of the best seafood meals. It is as fresh as you can imagine, simple, not expensive and delicious!
