Split to Dubrovnik

HI SCteach...
I will be in Croatia next month (my first time there) and will be taking a ferry from Hvar (Island a couple hours from Split via ferry) to Dubrovnik.
The ferry stops in Split before Hvar, and to get to Dubrovnik will take all day. I will be leaving Hvar at about 8:30am and arriving in Dubrovnik at 4:15pm.
There are lots of fodorites here who have been to Croatia recently and quite a few who will be there in September (like me!)
Some have taken the ferry like I will be doing and others have driven by car or have taken the bus. I think which mode of transportation is easiest will depend on how you prefer to travel.
From all my research for my trip it appears that public transportation between Split and Dubrovnik is plentiful between ferry or buses that leave frequently. There is no trains along that route.

There are basically three ways to get from Split to Dubrovnik. You can drive and it will take about three hours. Pleasant and easy drive unless you get stuck behind a tanker or truck. There are buses every hour to 2 hours between the 2 cities. I seem to recall the cost of the bus is around $20/person. You can also take a ferry but it takes alot longer, about 8 hours. Leaves Split at 0700 or 0630 depending on your dates of travel this year and gets into Dubrovnik either 1440 or 1615. My schedule does not give costs for the ferry Split-Dubrovnik but I would guess it to be less than $25 for deck class as Rijeka-Dubrovnik is E31 in high season. There may also be a high speed cat during high season but i do not have information on this.

Last September, we caught the overnight ferry from Rijeka which calls in at Split about 6 in the morning and then arrives in Hvar at about 8 am. We had a car so after a couple of days on Hvar we drove to the other end of the island and caught a ferry to Drvenik on the mainland. We then drove to Dubrovnik and it was a really stunning drive - one that we would not like to have missed.
The ferries are a really efficient way to get around in Croatia and the Jadrolinja website is very detailed as regards times and cost. You can also book your ferry ticket on line.
The weather at that time was reasonable - there were a couple of days heavy rain (during our trip to Pltvice Lakes unfortunately) but there was quite a lot of sunny weather too. I don't think I would like to be there in the high summer season as it would be too hot and too crowded.

The easiest wasy from Split to Dubrovnik, IMO, is by bus. They leave frequently, are comfortable, afford you magnificent views of the coastline, and are not expensive. You can even stop in some of the intervening lovely towns along the way.
If you want to see Hvar, there is a fast catamaran that only takes an hour or so from Split to Hvar town.
