Split or Trogir and then where??
 

Thanks for the great input on my earlier post on renting an apartment in Dubrovnik. we've rented a place for three nights that has great views and the stairs to go along with that! but we think we're prepared. So next question!

We'll be in Croatia and then Slovenia for a total of 13 nights the last two weeks of October. Leaving Dubrovnik we'll pick up a car and head north. We want to visit Split but are thinking we would spend the night in Trogir. We tend to like smaller towns and sea views and Trogir seems to fit. Obviously we know Split has seaviews but it seems more urban.

We're thinking we could head to Trogir and settle in and enjoy the town. Spend the night and the next day go into Split. Spent that night back in Trogir and then leave early the next AM. Thoughts??

After Trogir/Split our next destination is Plitvice but we're wondering if there are some other towns along the coast we should visit and perhaps spend a night. Plitvice would be one night and then we'll head to Istria. I'm sure I'll have questions about that but I'll post those separately.

Hvar is popular and not far. Timewise the difficult thing would be where to stash the car if you can't bring it with you on a car ferry, and what the ferry schedule is like.

Your plan for Split and Trogir should work. Have you already looked into lodging? Options will likely be less and less available as you move further and further from high season.

That really depends on your interests and what else your are planning in this short 13-night visit to Croatia and Slovenia.

Like kja said, we need to know more about your interests to make suggestions. From what you did tell us, I think your plan is right on the money (staying in Trogir). I suggest booking in advance because the town is so tiny, and it can easily book up--even in off-season there could be a festival or something.
So you have 13 nights total, with 3 allotted for Dubrovnik, two for Trogir, and one for Plitvice. That leaves a week but we don't know how many days you have planned for Slovenia.
Because it is not really sun and sea season, I think I'd focus on Istria, which just really seems like a fall destination to me. Of course if you are outdoorsy there are several other parks, and outside Zagreb there are castles. Sibenik and Zadar may be worth a stop if you are interested in world heritage sights (churches, etc.). Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the help. Current plan: Dubrovnik 3 nights, Trogir 2 nights, Plitvice 1 night, Rovinj 2-3 nights, Lake Bled 1 or 2 nights (2 if we decide to do a drive through the Julian Alps. Thoughts on that?), Ljublana 1-2 nights and finally 1 night in Zagreb as we fly home from there.

We really love gorgeous scenery, the coast, small and charming villages, good food, good wine. Lke mountains but would say we are more water people. We have traveled multiple times to Italy (tuscany, Umbria, Lakes, the big three) and to pretty much all the other European countries. We are perfectly happy driving along not quite sure where we're going to end up--although we do always settle in somewhere by 3-4 in the afternoon so we're not wandering the countryside in the dark.

Meant to particularly thank Jean for the link to Maitai Tom's post. I have read his reports before and this one is outstanding. I think we may just follow in his footsteps in many places!!
