Split and environs
 

Following research, including helpful advice from Fodorites, I have refined plans for my September travel to the Dolomites and Croatia. I will now travel to Split via Ancona and the ferry, arriving in Split at 7am on the 8th, with time for two nights before getting the bus to Dubrovnik on the 10th. I'll probably just relax, walk around, maybe do a ferry trip to see Trogir. Does anyone have any first hand advice for a reliable, perhaps 2-3 star hotel, also local restaurant/cafes? Thanks

you might enjoy two nights at the delightful and venerable <b>Hotel Park</b> in Split. A short pleasant walk from the heart of Split and Diocletian's digs, it's on a fine beach. If you like atmospheric 1920's style, it could be for you. We found it to be historically intriguing...superb bkfsts. I'll post a pic below if I can locate it.

During that visit we took the ferry from Ancona to Zadar, but I don't know about any ferries from Split to Trogir (which is very close to the Split airport). Trogir makes for a nice daytrip.

Hotel Park in Split...if you wish you can look at the rest of Croatian/Slovenian pics...and some old Yugoslavia stuf from 1980's

Have you considered the Hotel Peristyle or Hotel Vestibule? I couldn't afford either when I visited Split ( :-( ), but both still get great reviews and they are on my list should I ever be able to return to this amazing city!

BTW, I had more time than you and didn't have enough time to see everything I wanted to see in Split, so do give some thought to your priorities before getting there.

Also, Trogir is a 1/2 hour BUS ride from Split. The buses run routinely. Check a good guidebook to find the location of the bus stops at each end, as there are multiple routes, not all of which are convenient.

Thanks, I understand there is a water taxi to Trogir but can check - another option I've found is a ferry that allows a day trip to Hvar Island, so maybe I could spend one day there, and one day just in Split, however as you say, kja, there is much to do! A walk up the hill overlooking the city, the cathedral, the architecture, the free guided walk. Anyway thanks for your hotel suggestions, perhaps as with you on your earlier visit my budget isn't quite up to those beautiful looking places - but it's all good to start looking.

PS - tower it must have been delightful to have stayed in the Hotel Park, maybe I will sneak in for a drink in the lounge! It must also have been interesting to see the region in the old Yugoslavia days - I have friends who grew up there hence my interest in looking around.

FWIW, I far preferred Trogir to Hvar Town. The stonework in Trogir is extraordinary -- easy to see why it merited UNESCO World Heritage status. I thought Hvar Town beautiful, but WAY too upscale for my tastes. YMMV.

Its a very good location and they have a great breakfast.

With the time you have I would go to Trogir, Hvar is a big island and needs more time.. save it for a trip when you can get there for a few days.

We loved the Villa Moretti, just beyond Trogir in Ciovo. (5 minutes at the most.) Our room had a beautiful view of Trogir waterfront.

To be honest, I enjoyed driving the old Yugoslavia...much more adventurous in the 70's and 80's. Roads were quite poor in many locations, the people very warm and friendly...bargain rates for everything. Pretty much the same for all of Eastern and Central Europe back then. Not much of an influx of Western visitors (USA , Canada, UK, etc.)

My late first wife was with me on those exciting trips and she loved it, too. Anxious moments? Yes, when petrol was scarce and stations further apart. Then again, I'm a nostalgia freak (comes with old age!).

What Cape? Cod, Ann?

Cape Kidnappers, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Stunning coastline, Australasian gannet colonies, crayfish (lobsters) paua (abalone), amazing tractor/trailor ride along the beach to see the gannets. A favourite place of mine with precious family memories.

Stu a friend played in a world championship sporting event in Sarajevo in, um, 1973. I was non-travelling reserve for the team, duh. She talked so much about it, then went to Dubrovnik - so I've been wanting to visit ever since. Will head to Sarajevo and national parks in Bosnia/Herzegovina on a tour from Dubrovnik.

Mimar, Villa Moretti looks gorgeous, I'll think about Trogir as an option to stay.

Just revisiting this topic. Perhaps I needed to mention that my budget isn't quite up to those hotels recommended here. Does anyone have suggestions for more modest lodgings, just clean/comfy/reliable is what I need - for a two night stay in Split? In hope?

Not sure if it fits your budget, but Marmontova Luxury rooms are very nice and in a great location. No elevator, though -- you have to walk up 4 flights of stairs. It was perfect for us.

As I said on your other thread, try Booking.com to find places in/around Split including non-hotels such as sobe, rooms, etc.

I stayed in Split a few years ago (at some no-name sobe I found on a hostel booking website) and stayed in Trogir last week. Trogir is cute and small - very small compared to the center of Split. I liked Trogir but didn't fall in love with it; I think I prefer it to Split, just because it is so low key. If you can find something affordable in Split I'd probably stay there on a first visit.

You can also go straight into a tourist office when you arrive, tell them your budget and other wishes, and they will arrange a private room for you. For Dubrovnik, I would book in advance at just about any time of year, but I think in September for Split you'd be okay doing this.

Thanks everyone - admit I am wondering about Trogir compared with Split. Though I want to catch a bus to Dubrovnik early-ish the day I leave so Split might be better. Budget? Hesitate about this, it's a balance between clean/location/ambience and cost, I don't need a pillow menu! Perhaps €60-100? Possible? Yes Andrew am checking booking.com etc, however it's always worked so well for me on previous trips, getting personal recommendations from Fodorites.
And for another thread within a thread - is it easy and worth doing a day trip to Hvar from Split?
