Split & Dubrovnik???
 

I'm interested in visiting Croatia in early April and was wondering how far away Split was from Dubrovnik and if there was a bus or train between the two? I'm in my early 20s and will be going with three close friends and are looking for historical sites and museums to visit in addition to beach, restaurants and nightlife. Its cheaper to fly into Split so I think we'd use that as our home base for the four day weekend and want to make a day trip to Dubrovnik unless the other city has more to offer! Any have any suggestions? Thanks fo r your help!

There is no railway along the Croatian coast and no railway to Dubrovnik.
There are buses along the coast from Split to Dubrovnik every hour or so, with a journey time of about four and a half hours.
It's a very scenic journey but it's too far to go there and back in a day.
I'd suggest reading a guide book on Croatia.

A four day weekend? Where are ya'll flying in from?

Split has a beautiful boardwalk, and the little walled city is fabulous. From Split, you could day trip to Trogir, day trip to Hvar, Day trip to Brac. But Dubrovnik would be quite a haul for "day trip".

I think Dubrovnik would be a destination for a weekend by itself, with some daytrips out of there.

I agree with Geoff... Look at some guidebooks, and pictures... to get a feel for logistics as they are talked about in these posts.

There is a frequent, luxury coach service between the 2 cities. The trip takes about 4-4.5 hours.

Would you recommend one city over the other than?

Have not been to Split but Dubrovnik is a very special place, full of atmosphere and character. It's small but we found plenty to do, we had 4 nights in an apartment inside the old town. We'd go back tomorrow, loved it.

most people would prefer Dubrovnik - it is a unique town. From Dubrovnik you can visit Montenegro or Bosnia.
Split is a large city ( over 300.000
people ) with good connections to the islands.

I've been to both- there is a trip report under my name (misspelled Croatia in the title- oops!.

We loved Dubrovnik more than Split, for the beauty, peacefulness, and culture. For nightlife- Split would be the better city. And I think you would still have the historical sites to see and you could day trip to the islands for your beach fun.

I'm 30 now- and in only a few years difference I can see why I would have loved Split in my early 20's, but am now more partial to cities like Dubrovnik. Especially with friends versus travelling with your significant other.

And I agree- Dubrovnik isn't a day trip- it's a beautiful bus ride, but a bus ride nonetheless that can be wind-y at times. I wouldn't wish a back and forth in one day on anyone...

Hi, I just went to Croatia in October 2007 and had a fantastic time. I went to both Dubrovnik and Split, among other places. (If you are interested in reading about my adventures, check out my blog at www.paynoattention.net -- I have several entries about my Croatia trip, plus a few pictures, under the "Grouchy Woman on Croatia" category.) Anyway. You cannot do Dubrovnik as a day trip. It's about 4.5 hours each way by bus. You need to spend a night. And once you see it, you'll be incredibly glad you did. Seriously, it's gorgeous. By the way, I totally loved Split, but my own take is that there is more to do in Dubrovnik. If I were you, I'd spend two nights in each place.

more young people in Split and more political action as it was and is a place where Croats express themselves in art and drama. Dubrovnik is full of cruise ship passengers and really swell t-shirt shops. But, it is a world heritage site and the roof tops are new. Split just felt more real. Great outdoor market by the bus station each morning. Little old ladies stand over huge barrels mixing their homemade saurkraut with their bare hands. The flowers are unbelievable. Of course in Dubrovnik you can buy all the tchokes your heart desires. Nightlife in Split lasts longer too
