Split
My family is planning a trip to Croatia for the end of the summer and have scheduled 2 free days between leaving Hvar and flying from Split to Rome. We have no plans so far and could either spend time in Split, spend time outside the city somewhere, or do both. Does anyone have any ideas or advice on what there is to do in or around split?

Go to Solin and then to Trogir, which is a beautiful walled city. It is easy to get a bus from Split. Also, find out about the summer festival which runs til mid-August. If you love art, you may want to find out if you could visit Otavice, where Ivan Mestrovic was born.

A day in Trogir or Sibenik, could be a nice trip plus Krka waterfalls. Go down the coast to Makarska rivera, visitin Omis and Cetina river canyons, some lunch there or even rafting. Split itself is a very intersting town, jsut walk around, visit market, go to marijan hill or some of well equiped beaches.

We enjoyed Split. It's an interesting town which should occupy you easily for a full day. Would have liked to have had time to see Trogir as well.

If you like scupture (or if you aren't sure whether you like it), be sure to visit the Ivan Mestrovic museum in Split and don't miss his chapel (slightly further along the same road). Even the view from the museum is gorgeous.

We stayed 3 nights in Trogir, driving into Split for a day. The other day was divided between Trogir itself and Solano, the Roman ruins where Diocletian lived. We preferred coming home at night to a more peaceful, small town than staying in hectic Split. Accommodations are less expensive in Trogir.
