hi...got a question about money...i realize it is expensive in the uk for a vacation...i am wondering what amount of money should i take with us-or have available through atm's...for 5 days in london and 8-9 days driving around the countryside...i realize this may be a subjective question and everyone is different but i thought it may be useful to see what some people who have been there think

Since I charge anything that can possibly be charged..If I have $1000.00 available I never spend it! Might use 400 or so for incidentials...cabs, street food,newspapers,stamps...

He/she is talking about cash in hand! If you use credit cards for everything.. you only need cash for incidentials...you may spend 100 or 500 a day in London...but most of that will be on your credit card...I've gone a week or more and never spent any in hand cash!

I've used the rule of thumb of $90 a day for hotel, transportation, food and entrance fees to museums, etc. This is sharing a room with a traveling companion. This doesn't include airfare, railpass, long-distance train or car rental. Sometimes I spend less and sometimes more a day but it gives me a ballpark amount to have available. I don't carry much cash, I use my credit card for the purchases I can and get cash from the ATM for the rest. I've used this rule of thumb for several trips and it seems to work for me. I have had to adjust for the exchange rates, it used to be $75/day. I don't stay in fancy places, in UK, I stayed in B&B's most of the time. Breakfast at a B&B in the UK is big so I eat a light lunch and almost always have dinner in a nice restaurant.
