Spello or Bevagna?

Wanting to choose a town in this area that is both convenient for touring other nearby areas but also of interest in itself. Have read lots but just end up being more conflicted!

Any ideas and if so, any recommendations for places to stay.

thanks a lot

Love both--my choice would be about flat versus hilly---Bevagna is flat. Look at Palazzzo Brunamonti.

If you're relying on public transportation, Spello is serviced by bus (daily except Sundays) AND by Trenitalia regionale train (daily). Bevagna is serviced exclusively by bus (none on Sundays). You can reach Spello by train directly from Rome and Florence (without a connection). To reach Bevagna, you must connect to the bus at the Foligno train station.

Spello is a bit larger, and hilly. Bevagna is smaller and flat. The central square of Bevagna is arguably the most "perfect" medieval square in Italy.

Most trains from Rome to Spello require a connection in Foligno.

But a handful do not!

You asked for a town that is also of interest in itself. IMO, the most interesting town in that area is Assisi. If you are interested in St Francis, it is quite the place.

If it's only between Spello and Bevagna, I prefer Bevagna's location.

You didn't mention using only public trans which I wouldn't recommend for exploring Umbria. But if that's your plan, then consider Perugia or Spoleto unless you're spending many days in the area and have the time to plan around bus and train schedules.

We have spent several days in Palazzo Brunamonti in Bevagna and I can highly recommend it. It is extremely clean, small and family-run and very personable. A large breakfast is included and the beds were fabulous !!
