Hi Maureen,

Being a 20-something myself, I recommend that she hit the department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps simply because she can access all the best and major clothing brands plus all the shoes/bags/jewellry brands in the one place, and you will know exactly where she is...either in this tall building, or that one! Different brands and styles at different price points. Ideal if there isn't much time to shop.

Some brands I like for smart basics and casuals are Comptoirs des Cotonniers, A.P.C, Petit Bateau (much cheaper in France than in the States), and Bensimon.

Tara Jarmon, and Et Vous are dressier brands.

Lastly, have you heard of La Redoute? It's a French textiles company that does its own line of clothing and invites designers like Cacharel and Jean Paul Gauthier to do lines too. Funny thing is the US prices are much cheaper than the prices on the French website. Take a look at the site, perhaps she can order French designer clothes online for much cheaper than buying in Paris! There's a sale on right now too...

I'm going to the Samaritaine -- a department store a few blocks from The Louvre...my MIL went there and recommended it, and I saw in Rick Steves Paris book that it's a big department store in the heart of Paris with reasonable prices. I hear it also has a great place to lunch on the roof -- overlooking the Seine and much more.

Good luck fending off your daughter from all the boys!

Thanks, Jules and Nomad. I just returned from shoe shopping with my daughter. My idea was to get her some 'practical' shoes for walking all over Europe. Her idea of practical and mine do not mix. We ended up with 4 pairs-- two practical, one with kitten heels, and one of which will go back after she decides on colors.
But I told her, this is exactly how I DON'T want to spend my time in Paris-- sitting in a store watching her try on things! Not my idea of fun. Maybe I can still convince her she wants an iPod photo more than she wants shopping cash! (Then I'm off the hook.)
Thanks for the store and website suggestions. But I think she's more interested in finding that relatively undiscovered boutique/shop that has one-of-a-kind stuff, not something she can find in the states.

We had a great time in London-Paris-Amsterdam for two weeks. My daughter did find odd bits of time here and there to shop, but we didn't make it a focus of any day so she had just a few hours total to browse.

Here's what we found. In London, she liked TopShop, Mango and Zara on Oxford Street. The TopShop especially had unique items and she found a really cute dress there. Then in Paris, on the Champs Elysee she bought a skirt and jeans at Zara and some perfume at Sephora. We window shopped the high end designer windows near the Champs Elysee, but didn't attempt to go inside.

Actually, she liked the funky shops in Amsterdam best, and thought they offered more interesting items than what she'd seen in London or Paris. But by then she'd pretty much fulfilled her shopping bug.

Anyway, lots of fun. And, of course, she brought home one of the gathered, longer length mid-calf summer skirts everyone is wearing in Paris. Also, she spotted a trend in Paris, having to do with boots and jeans (not sure I can describe it), and we predict we'll soon see that look everywhere in the states.

P.S. Forgot to mention she liked the boutiques in Paris near the Musee Carnavalet. Very nice things, but too expensive for her budget. Sorry to say we didn't have time to get to the Latin Quarter.
