Your Dad will love the Ceremony of the Keys. We went to it a few years ago, and it felt so authentic to be in the Tower property at sunset, listening to the history of the ceremony while we witnessed it. Very nice choice.

Agree--Greenwich is nice half day.
A boat ride on Regents Canal with look around one end or the other (Camden Market is busy and youngish but interesting) would be good--or just the boat ride as a round trip is a quiet but fascinating thing.
I've heard nothing but good about the Imperial War Museum so we are headed there (in a little over a week--weeee!)
Museum of London? Looking for the bits of Rome left in the City? One of the Markets? Play at the Globe?
Has he seen all the Lungs of London (the parks)?--Regents is really lovely.

Buckingham Palace is open in August and September for special garden and evening tours -- it's not open like that for the rest of the year. That is something really special. The ceremony of the keys is fantastic! I hope you get tickets! Otherwise Sadler's Wells has some nice performances, or Shakespeare's Globe has a nice line up this fall.
