Special restaurants - recommendations needed
I'm mostly traveling on a budget, but good food is part of the fun for me. I have room in my budget for a handful of splurge meals - say 50 or 60 euros per person without wine. Do you have any recommendations for any of these places?
Mykonos Santorini Rhodes Nafplio Olympia Meteora Athens I'd also be interested in any less splurgy options as well. Thanks! |
Santorini: Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia, Katina's in Amoudi Bay, Santorini Mou in Oia, Kastro in Oia, Ntomatini in Perissa, Al Fresco in Kamari.

Vassilenas in Athens and Piraeus
Nireas and Laganis at Rhodos |
A follow-up question: should reservations typically be made at these restaurants? (Probably, she answers herself.)

It has been about 6 years ago but we really enjoyed the rooftop restaurant at the Grande Bretagne Hotel in Athens. The view was as good as the meal. Looks like it still gets good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Katrin's in Mykonos.

Here are some great restaurants in Athens :
Melilotos ( Monastiraki) Attikos Greek House ( Acropolis - great food amazing view) Mani Mani ( Acropolis ) Trapezaria ( Acropolis) |
Less splurgy in Athens: Scholarheia on a street below the Acropolis located in an old house. This will be convenient if you are staying in the Plaka area. The food is quite good and includes house wine. A tray is brought around and you select five items--dessert is complimentary. I think this restaurant was recommended in a Fodor's Guidebook but we came across it by accident.

Sorry! The price of the meal includes a carafe of house wine.

Agree with clausar about Mani Mani in Athens. Wonderful food.
We loved Roka in Oia, Santorini. We were there 8n 2011, and ate there twice, we liked it so much. Food was moderately-priced and the ambience welcoming and comfortable. Reservations are generally needed. |
Re Scholarhia, I forget whether artsnletters is traveling solo … not really a good deal for one -- can't do the many-item thing. When I'm on my own, and want reliability in Plaka center … I trundle down to "restaurant square" (you know, that area that Kidathineon runs into … cafes & tavernas all around, som trees in center)… SO many restaurants, many bad -- but Vizentino (Byzantino) actually offers good value -- there are long tables of Greeks out for a special dinner, so u know it's not a gyp. Snag one of the SMALL tables by/behind the newspaper kiosk … and order something baked low/slow -- lamb in lemon sauce, veggies, glass o wine = €11-12. My fave cafe in area for a peaceful, quiet sit under flowering trees = Diogenes. Find Lysikrates monument… Diogenes hidden behind, under trees. In May, mainly greeks, talking for hours over a frappe or ice cream. Nice cushioned wicker tub chairs. no groups.
