Spas/Baths in the Salzburg area??
 

Hello all! I'm down to the final details of our trip. My mom and I will be staying for 4 nights in the Salzburg area. We're a little bummed that we'll be missing Baden-Baden this trip and were wondering if there were any similar baths in the Salzburg region. We're not really looking for a typical US spa that offers massages, facials etc... we were hoping to experience more of a "Bath" type atmosphere (is that Roman???). Are there any at all? Details please?

Well, I didn't do any bath treatments while in the area, as DH wasn't particularly interested, but I do recall there being several towns that advertized bath experiences. Bad Reichenhall has several, I believe. Here is a website for Bad Reichenhall, where you should be able to find some information:

Also, Berchtesgaden has the Watzmann Therme. I think its more of a swimming pool complex but I believe it also has some baths.

I would seek out any town with the name "Bad" in it, as I believe it means "bath" and will probably have the baths that you are looking for.

Bad Reichenhall is a very good choice. There is everything that makes a proper spa.

From Salzburg it is 15 minutes by taxi and 30 minutes by train. Very convenient.

Thanks for the suggestion- I looked on the website, but couldn't find any prices. Might this be a "European" experience-type spa? Or something I might find here in Texas? Does that question make any sense? :)

Yes, another thanks for those suggestions! I'm taking Mom to Salzburg for 5 days in late May and we'll probably do a day trip to Bad Reichenhall...I hadn't realized it was only a 30 minute train ride away (no changes, 4.6 euros each way). I'll stuff our bathing suits and two towels in my nylon daybag in case we decide to try the spa.
TXgalinGA, we'll let you know how it compares to our Baden-Baden experiences.

We're doing the SOM tour, Eagle's Nest, and a day trip to Hallstatt...

We'll have to see how the weather co-operates. Also, Mom is in her 70s, so nothing too strenuous physically. We've got planned: a day just hanging in Sburg (carriage tour, Mozart stuff), Sound of Music tour day, Bad Reichenhall day, and Hallstatt day. She's been to Berchtesgaden/Eagle's Nest and Innsbruck before, so those are not on for this trip.
Mom really likes Baden-Baden (we do too), so BR should be a hit. I'm hoping it will be warm (not hot) and sunny for our trip.

Bad Reichenhall was gorgeous, we spent a few hours there today. We took the postbus(es) instead of the train...bus #260 on the way over and #180 back. The ride on the #180 bus is more scenic. BR is a great little town with a nice spa. When I go back to this area with my husband and cocker, we may stay there instead of Salzburg.
Tomorrow Mom and I are doing the morning 4 hour SoM tour, then catching the afternoon #840 postbus to Berchtesgaden and taking the train back. It's been raining every day, but it's still great to be here.

Oh good! Did you go to the spa? What were the prices like? We want an experience we can't get here at home, like Baden-Baden.... is that what it is like? Thanks for your tips- I'm glad y'all are having a nice time despite the wet weather!

Our guide from Panarama tours (Anne, I believe) was terrific on the SOM tour. I think she knows the movie and trivia better than her own childrens names!

I hope I'm not too late to share this with you. We asked for a good place to have dessert when we had a few free minutes on our tour. Just after visiting the church in which Maria and and the Captain were married, we went to Cafe Braun. It was just a few minutes walk from the church. The streudel with both ice cream and a sauce were DELICIOUS! If you have time and an adequate sweet tooth, I'd recomend it! The serving is large enough that you and your mom could share it.

We didn't find any of the towns we visited in the Salzburg region to have the same atmosphere of Baden-Baden. Which was ok, we weren't looking for that (we go to Baden-Baden itself often enough, although won't be there for the next few weeks as it's filled with British footballers, their wives/girlfriends and their fans). If you are hoping to duplicate the BB experience, you will be disappointed--better to enjoy the towns for their own merits. Although we didn't use the spa at Bad Reichenhall, that town would be our first choice for a spa experience. Bad Gastein was the most disappointing--we weren't really prepared for how STEEP the town layout is--my mother simply couldn't cope with the streets and I wasn't keen on them either. Also it seemed rather dated and stuffy, compared both to BB and to the other towns we visited in the Salzburg region. The Bad Reichenhall spa, fyi, is based on salt water. Or so we were told. Pretty town. Getting there by the #180 postbus is more scenic (and cheaper) than going by train. A little slower than the train, too, but not significantly.

There's some sort of "bad" next to the Sheraton hotel in Salzburg. I've passed there often but I didn't see what is included. It's large though.

Maybe this isn't what you're looking but it is very central and can walk.
