Spanish Steps?

Does anyone know the history of the Spanish Steps and why it is such a tourist sight.
Thanks

Yes, it was sponsored by various Kings of France who wanted to place a statute of the French King there. Various Popes opposed the construction until a settlement, minus the statute, and with payment, was reached.

Why it such a tourist sight? Great location, architecture, and general ambiance would be my purely subjective guess. Have you been there?

Yes I have and loved the ambiance and archtecture. I was just sitting here thinking of my recent trip to Rome and realized that I didn't know any history of the Spanish Steps.
Thanks
