Spanish article re Mario & Gweneth
The last time I shared something in spanish it upset & insulted some folks. So my apologies in advance.
Interesting in view of the Pata Negra thread..I can't imagine going to Spain & NOT having any jamon.
I guess if I were a vegetarian.
I thought some might find this interesting especially as Geweth says her dad used to raise Pata Negra pigs (?) hmmm......

She refers to the host family in Talavera de la Reina.
I think it is interesting the fact that although she doesn´t eat meat, she can find lots of thing to eat and love.
The sneak preview :

Yes it's nice that they are sharing the glories of Spain on TV.
Tony Bourdain (the famous NY chef) says that Spain is THE place for the future of cooking & magic, as opposed to France or Italy.
Well it is not necessarily one over the other. Why always a competition?.
I happen to love Spain though.
I did see Gewneth & Mario on Oprah advertising the show.
Mario made a paella. I was thinking of Lin & Cova becaue Mario put all kinds of things together in it (chorizo & seafood) and I recall from out past threads that's a big nono nono no......

In fact, anything cooked on that kind of pan is a paella...because the paella is the pan's name
What you definitely can't call it is a Paella Valenciana (you know, no chorizo, no seafood, no pepper..)

Hi amsdon,
I'm eagerly awaiting the airing of this series on my PBS channel. Is it coming soon to yours?
Gwyneth spent a summer during high school (she went to Spence in Manhattan) with that Talavera de la Reina family and apparently has remained quite close to them ever since. When her own father died, her Spanish host mother immediately flew to Rome to be with her, and I believe Gwyneth tries to visit them and her "sisters" who live in Madrid every year.
Here's the article (with recipes) from the Sept. Food and Wine mag. about the series and their travels:
http://tinyurl.com/6cnzcn
They also found time for a little vinoterapia at the Gehry's Marqués de Riscal hotel in Elciego and found their way to tiny, totally off the beaten path Casa Pinto in Cambados (Pontevedra), where I once had the best baby clams of my entire life! Maybe they asked the same lady winemaker at Palacio de Fefiñanes for her reco of a great hidden gem!
What a great culinary road trip!

Kend yes it was YOU that set the record straight ....
Thanks!
Mario was " saying you can add anything you want to add" and I could just hear you guys over there grumbling) It was kind of odd though I am certain Oprah has had plenty of experience with paella (or some sort of arroz at least) she was really down playing her knowledge of spanish food IMO for the sake of the show)
Maribel, I asked DH to TVO it and I am still waiting, I hope we did not miss the first episode that may have been last Saturday while I was working.
Geweth said she did the show 2/3 days at a time and flew back home to be with her babies in between!
Yikes that would really change the picture for this trip, although I certainly understand. I guess we all know what Mario did to fill his days/night...todos tipo de vino.
Not that here's anything wrong with that..... O

I posted this on the Lounge:
There is a new PBS show titled "On the Road Again...Spain."
I would rather watch reruns of Lawrence Welk. Mario Batali is the star as he tarvels about Spain with Gwyneth Paltrow, fod writer Mark Bittman of the NY Times, and a beautiful Spainish actress, Claudia Bassols.
It is witless and without charm. Throughout Willie Nelson plays a Spanish version of "On The Road Again" but the cast sounds like they spent too much time in Willie's trailer.
Bittman tarvels with Bassols and it is like a smarmy uncle with a gorgeous niece. You cringe every time he tries to be funny.
Mario and Gwyneth travel together, but everyone's comments are obvious and useless. There is much camera time watching the Spanish coutryside pass. There is even a hookey scene wher Don Quixote and Sancho Panza appear.
I will however try one dish where bread, garlic and chorizo are sauteed together.
To make matters worse you are informed that Mario had food poisoning from raw partridge. It is as ugly as wtaching him in his AC/DC shorts and Crocs.
Paltrow said she does not eat processed food. She did try the cooked partridge, however.
I am not Spanish but my father-in-law was born in Galicia and over the years we have spent much time in Spain, a country for which we ahve great affection. My wife just finished walking 500 miles of El Camino. We hoped the show would be better.
We saw the Anthony Bourdain episode about Spain and that was signifcantly better and truly highlighted some of the great cuisines of Spain.

Hey, is there a chance your wife can post on El Camino experience?
Sorry I do not how to transfer the topic URL's to this thread.
However:
If you enter Camino and Spain at the top of Europe Board search feature you will get many reposnes.
Those called Camino Entries I and II are hers from this summer.
The Bathroom of San Roman is mine.
Please let me know if you find them.
Thanks.
