Wow, thanks everyone. And Maribel, thank you for access to your updated file. Wish the palace had the changing of the guard when we were in Madrid, that would have been something to see from your description.

Another note about the Royal Palace:

Forgot to mention that currently, until June 1, there is a special, free exhibit of Baroque tapestries, “Threads of Splendor”, at the Palace, sponsored jointly by the Patrimonio Nacional and Metropolitan Museum of New York. It’s housed in the Palace’s temporary exhibition space.

Another freebie on Sundays:

The Museum of Decorative Arts, housing textiles, ceramics, furniture, glass, crystal, jewelry, free on Sundays from 10-3 (also May 18).

On the 1st floor (US 2nd) you'll find medieval and Renaissance pieces, including Flemish tapestries. On the 2nd floor, there are reproduction rooms of an 18th century noble home along with Talavera ceramics. On the 3rd floor the pieces come from the Bourbon Dynasty, and 19th century objets are found on the 4th floor along with a replica of a ceramic tiled Valencian palace kitchen.
It's located on Calle Montalbán 12, between Plaza Neptuno and Plaza Cibeles.

And entrance to the Botanical Garden next to the Prado only costs €2.
