Spain: Toledo to Granada driving route options (two proposed)
Hi all,
I am currently in Toledo, heading to Granada tomorrow. I have currently proposed two options - one that follows the highway, and one that doesn't. However, both of these routes are proposed by Google Maps; and while i think the highway one is reliable, I wonder whether the non-highway detour is worthwhile, or whether there are better alternatives.
So, the trip is planning to leave Toledo, to Consuegra, Úbeda and then on to Granada. The highway trip is mapped here: http://goo.gl/maps/BNJh2 - it's obviously fairly straightforward.
The alternative non-highway version is mapped here: http://goo.gl/maps/iRwjf
It appears to take a detour via/through the national park, as its major deviation, adding 60-70 kilometres to the trip, but over 2 hours 30 minutes to the time (most likely due to lower speed roads).
So, any advice on either of these routes - or any alternative routes - would be fantastic!

Actually, I notice a slight modification - to continue to use the highways but to detour through Montiel and Villacarrillo - results in a smaller addition in distance and time http://goo.gl/maps/bY71L
(Note that purpose of Consuegra is to see the windmills.

i'd put in Consuegra if you have the time. well wroth it IMO. Be sure to know your immediate and later hiway/road numbers. Getting out of Toledo is always F-U-N.. Be prepared. it is like the spoke of a wheel and it seems there are several ways to eventually get the same place or so it seemed!

I rented from Europecar (through Kemwel.com) and picked my car up outside the walls of Toledo. Took a cab there with my luggage. I don't think a GPS would work in Toledo to guide you out!
I actually rented it it on a Saturday, took a cab there, drove to Consuegra for the day. Returned to Toledo and parked the car in a free lot by the bus station and took the bus back into Toledo. Took another taxi with my luggage back to the rental car on Monday when I was leaving Toledo.
Rental car office was closed on Sundays.

I mean actually when you are OUT of the historic part and down on the regular roads... if you ever go there, you'll know exactly what I mean.
Next timeI go I'll have to see how well I do.. probably depends on WHERE you are going next.
It is very easy driving once on the right road. I doubt you'll encounter any problems and the new roads are fabulous and unless they say "AP" are free.
