I did not mean that you should provide a full accounting of your travels in Spain, ekscrunchy, but was surprised when you seemed to criticize someone for not knowing you had been somewhere that poster recommended. Perhaps I misunderstood.

i had the anti-populist stance about Italy for 20 years. It took 20 years of poking round the back waters of Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, Lombardy et alia before I finally drummed up the courage to endure Venice and Rome in summer.

two of the best trips I ever took. They are popular for a reason.

I really hate crowds. I live in London, and avoid Kensington/Knightsbridge/Chelsea/Mayfair like the plague most times, but particularly in August, unless there is something special on.

I'll always go to Rome, and had a brilliant 9 day trip there about two years ago. I will avoid weekends though!

Venice, I have been to a few times and love it, but the cost of hotels put me off. Last September, I land here and headed right out to the Veneto - Staying in Padua, visiting Vincenzo and other small towns, seeing Palladio villas. It was one of the best trips ever. I do want to visit Venice again, of course.

I think I would consider the Amalfi if I came into a gob of money and could stay in one of those gorgeous five-star hotels :)

So why not send all your friends a PM? Then you get the recommendations you want.

I agree, we stayed in Vincenza, drove down the Brenta and then in to Venice. Great day.

Not sure I could cope with the driving on the Amalfi.

First off, I do not know what KMD means.
Second, I still do not understand. You think I should resurrect a post describing a ten-year's past trip to Extremadura? How will that help THIS thread, asking for other ideas? But if you insist, here is one, which you could easily find by just clicking on my name and finding old trip reports. How does that assist this thread, especially since I have taken many trips without filing reports here..?? And go ahead and criticize..this report depicts a visit of only one week's duration which was all we could manage at that time due to work constraints. BritishCaicos: I could live in Padua or Vincenza (apologies, spelt wrongly in my post). I have given up driving, as it is just too stressful to do on my own. I hired a Palladian expert to drive me to three of the villas for a day - well worth it.

British Caicos: I will do my best to get to El Campero. On their website they seemed to be perpetually sold out and I am not sure the parador, where I am booked in Cadiz, will be that helpful in securing a booking for me..I will call them when the date nears... Girona -- and parts of the Costa Brava (if you haven't already visited them) -- could prove very interesting to you!

Starting a cruise in Palma [Majorca] next month.

Then got the next 3 days, 0800-1800 in Cartagena, Malaga and Cadiz. Been to Malaga several time and prefer it to over-trodden Barcelona, Cadiz once, and am really looking forward to this brief visit . And meeting up with an old school chum from almost 50 years ago, and her hubby, in Cartagena.

Then cruise across The Pond to the Eastern Caribbean with a day in Funchal [Madeira] on the way.

Happy Days.

Funchal is very interesting. See if you time for a levada walk and a meal with the ugliest fish on the planet-espada or black scabbardfish.

For less discovered places in Spain that are totally worthy:

-Segovia
-Toledo
-Cádiz
-Málaga
-La Palma (charming canarian island)

Sorry, those cannot be considered less discovered as they are all well-known and in every guide book.

You will be in Seville and Cadiz, so if you can make the transportation work, Sanlucar de Barrameda is a place hardly anyone mentions, but I loved it. An evening in a plaza, eating tapas and watching local families socialize is a very happy travel memory.

Balearic islands are really nice.

If you are looking for stillness and nature, give Menorca a try.
Mallorca is much popular and crowded in summer, but it has nice corners that are not so touristic.

I personally liked Tarifa, the very southernmost point in Spain. We were there last July and thoroughly enjoyed the delightful ambiance and beachy, holiday vibe of the town. It was filled with locals and some Brits, but no fellow Americans that I could spot (or hear). We felt like we were in a really unique part of Spain that not many people get to - or at least a spot the locals go to for holidays. If we had allowed more time, we could have explored the coast up to Trafalgar (where the famous naval battle took place and I had wanted to see the area!). We got to Tarifa taking the COMES bus from Sevilla, it was about 3 hours south.

I also liked Sanlucar....very good idea! CasaBigote is a very good restaurant in that town..

My wife and I just returned from a week and a half just in Andalusia, so I can only speak about that area. I would recommend highly Cordoba. We really liked the town. The Mezquita is a must-see and they have several fine smaller museums and sights. For food you may wish to try Ordonez Taberna and Vinoteca, on Calle Medina and Corella.
Then there is also Jerez de la Frontera, where there are two restaurants owned by the same family which are absolutely outstanding, A Mar (for seafood) , Calle Latorre 8, and Albores ( Albores | Restaurante) If you are a Foodie, then you may be interested in the Sherry Houses of Jerez, where they make and celler the stuff. Jerez also has the "Horse Ballet" at the Royal Andalusian Equestrian Academy, if you or someone in your party like equestrian.

Both cities are rail stops on the Madrid-Cadiz high speed line.
