Spain - Small Cities/Villages to stay
 

I am planning a trip to Spain and will be going to the following cities:

Barcelona
Zaragoza
San Sabatian
Burgos
Segovia
Toledo
Madrid

We will be driving and would like to find some places in between the major cities. I did this in Italy and it was a great way to recharge your batteries. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Pick up Michelin Regional Maps No. 573 (Pais Vasco/Euskadi, Navarra, La Rioja) No. 574 (Aragon & Catalunya) & No. 575 (Castilla y León, Madrid) and plan your route.

Just to the east of San Sebastian is Hondarribia and to the west is Getaria.

I trust you have at least 18 days for this trip.
I would add Avila to the mix.

Yes. Lekeito is nice, Add Avila, Salamanca and Segovia and you will not be sorry. In Burgos-- Hotel Theatro has underground parking, is on the river and is very convenient. Segovia has Infante Isabella with valet parking on the plaza. (Sign says no car traffic but you can drive to the very front of the hotel)Salamanca may be a parking problem in the old town area but google hotels that have parking. Avila can be a day trip and park just outside the walls..Lovely parador..Hostal Arcos II in Cuidad Rodrigo is very nice and has a private parking area right in front.In Slalmanca Zazu Bistro in Plaza de la Libertad has very fine food and ambiance and although not cheap well worth the price, as is Casa Lis down near the Art Noveau Museum also called Lis. If you get to Sala. hie thee to Van Dyke Calle for the outstandiing tapas bars..Not at all touristy! The whole street is awash with tapas..one for sure to go to is Ruffos.. Lucky you take 30 you will not be sorry.

In Avila, I stayed in the lovely Hotel Palacios de Los Velada directly across from the Cathedral within the walls. It has an underground parking lot that you enter directly on the left of the hotel (if standing in front of the hotel, the driveway runs immediately next to the front door.)

In Salamanca, I stayed at the NH Hotel de Cathedral (sp ?) again overlooking the Cathedral, Underground hotel parking is around the corner (on the street to the right if standing in font of the hotel but its one way the wrong way so you need to drive around to enter that street from the correct direction).

In Segovia, I stayed at the Infante Isabella that amer_can notes. And, you can drive directly to the front and they will valet your car. You may have to convince the policeman at the entrance to the square but up on the wall to the square's entrance, there is a sign that reinforces this. Again, a room that looked over the Cathedral. Notice a pattern with me? LOL!

Love your pattern...I'm cut from the same cloth.. Although in Sala. I was a guest of DD in a lovely 2 bedrm apt. Couldn't ask for more in this awesome part of the world..

It is a gorgeous land with wonderful people, sites, and food!

Am looking forward to this year's trip to NW Spain. Just having difficulty on deciding which towns to stay. The more I research, the more I want to change and/or extend my itinerary. Unfortunately, the extension won"t be possible I'm afraid! I just need to retire so I can have the travel time I need! LOL!

Amer_can, how so very lucky of you to have a DD living in Salamanca! It is a city that I could live In also.

DD is back home but I sure took advantage of the stay in Salam. DD was studying Spanish for certification and we did lots of cruising around on weekends. Many small towns, locations, Roman roads, Tapas, Cava, Rosado, jambon, lomo, and on and on. Even got to do about 40-50Ks total on 2 different route to Santiago. Yes, blessed!! Nearly 12 weeks in total 1/2 in Fall 2011 and 1/2 in Fall 2012!!! Hope I last long enough to do it again and am still able to move easily..8th decade is upon me!!!
