SPAIN-MOROCCO-PORTUGAL

Is this a feasable trip? We would like to fly into Madrid, drive to Costa De Sol, visit Morrocco and then drive to Lisbon and fly back home. Can anyone give me information regarding the driving portion of this proposed trip? How do you get from Spain to Morocco? How much time should we allow for Madrid? Morocco?Lisbon? What stops would you advise for the auto portion of the trip? Do you have any internet sites you would refer me to? Thank you in advance for your imput.

How much time are you planning on spending on this adventure? The driving portion is easy, but you should sit down with a good map and decide on what you would like to see and do. There is a lot of country between Madrid and the southern coast and a lot of history.

You can take the ferry to Morocco and spend a day, or several, but don't plan on taking the rental car.

There is one other point to make regarding your rental car. There is a steep drop-off fee if you plan on picking the car up in Madrid and dropping it off in Lisbon.

Thanks for all the information. Our trip will be about three weeks. Is it feasable to do it a circle tour, such as from Madrid to Costa de sol to Lisbon and back to Madrid?

The circular trip shouldn't be a problem. You can check the distances at Mappy.com.

When is your trip going to happen and why the fixation on the Costa del Sol?

You could do what you propose: There are even ferry tours from Malaga over to Tangier during the summer months. I, personally, don't care for what the Costa del Sol has become since my first visit there (1959).

When I am on vacation I would rather let someone else do the driving. Short trips are OK but Madrid-Malaga is a hike! I would take AVE or fly Madrid-Sevilla and pick up a rental car at Sevilla's Santa Justa rail station or at the airport. Then I would do an Andalucia 'loop,' visiting Granada, Malaga, Nerja, Ronda, Cadiz el Puerto de Santa Maria, Jerez de la frontera and places of interest in between.

Much depends on when your visit is: If it's springtime (after Easter), there are Fiestas and Ferias in various places in Andalucia.

I have just returned from the trip I first inquired about in Jan. 2006. I would like to thank all those who gave me advise and suggestions. It was a wonderful trip. Special thanks go to Robert2533 and Maribel who gave wonderful advice. A full report will follow with photos very soon.

It depends on how in-depth you want the trip to be. We did a trip from Lisbon over to Merida down through Andalusia a couple of day relaxing in Marbella and then up to Madrid from which we did a couple of day trips. That took 3 weeks and could easily have taken more.

On the way down from Madrid you will want to see - at a minimum - Seville, Granada, Cordoba and a couple of white villages.

Also - we spent limited time in Portugal - Lisbon and area and then over to Merida.

If you want to see more of Portugal and/or anything in Morrocco (other than to say you've been there) I would think you're talking 4 weeks at least.
