Spain holidays

In researching our upcoming trip to Spain I noticed that most tourist sites, museums, etc. in Barcelona are closed on Dec. 26th as well as on Christmas day. Is this the case throughout Spain, particularly in Madrid & Seville? Also, is there generally a good selection of restaurants open on these dates in Barcelona, Madrid, & Seville?

Thanks for any info!

I don't know why they should be closed, being a tuesday. Perhaps it is some local holiday in barcelona.

bilboburgler Nov 10th, 2006 04:06 AM

Yes it is holiday. Now don't tell me there is no national holiday web site........

Actually, on most of the websites I checked nothing is listed for the 26th. However, there was one website that lists it as St. Stephen Day. As we're trying to figure out where to be in Spain on which days, I'm just trying to find out whether things are open throughout Spain (other than Barcelona) on that day.

I would imagine most public places are closed in all Spain on Dec 26th.

Hello again,
I have been browsing the web and reached no conclusion, this country is crazier every day....
Google for "Fiestas Locales" and you can check in andalusia per province and per town/city. www.famp.es
In Yahoo directory I have found that Dec26 is holiday in bercelona because it is a National (Estatal) holiday, but in fact it isn't that I remember. In other regions' websites, it should appear as such, but it doesn't.
There is a Decree of last June I have read, it says that holi-days falling on sundays can be moved to the following monday (let us not miss a single holiday!!!), but it is neither the case, as Xmas day is on Monday.

Unless it is a local holiday in barcelona, consider it labor day. Anyway, I'll keep an eye.

Good news:

go to http://www.euroresidentes.com/calend...boral_2006.htm

or google for Calendario Laboral 2006
which is the official one. According to this, Dec26 is holiday in Cataluña and Balearic islands (dont ask me why).

Notice that local holidays are not found in this Calendario, but in directories such as FAMP in my previous post.

Thanks, josele -- this is most helpful!

Dec 26th (Boxing Day) is a holiday across western Europe. Very little will be open in Spain, as on xmas day.

You could try the nearby coastal towns of the Costa Brava/Blanca as possibly some places there will be open as British and other people holiday there in winter. Check with local tourist offices when there.

I insist Dec26 has never been a holiday in Spain, except where cited above. Outside Balearic Isles and Cataluña, expect to find everything open.
In any case, I'll make a post on Dec27!!!!

don't trust the brits toopen on 26th. Its "boxing day"............

26th of December, Saint Stephen, has always been a holiday in Cataluña and the Balearic Islands. Itīs more usual to celebrate the 25th and the 26th, in opposite to the rest of Spain, where it is more usual to celebrate the dinner on the 24th and the 25th.

So, we will be working in the rest of Spain (but I had a holiday last Thursday, the Almudena in Madrid, and we shouldnīt complain about holidays in other regions ...).

December 26 is a holiday in many countries of Europe but not in Spain. Even if it were a holiday I wouldn't worry. I was in Barcelona on January 6, a holiday in Spain, and everything was open except government offices.

Aleta Nov 12th, 2006 11:09 AM

Trust someone who was in Barcelona on the 26th, holiday or no holiday everything will be closed! We expected the 25th, but 26th was also the case.
