Spain car rental: pick up/drop off in different cities?
 

I am planning a trip to Spain where we'll be flying into Madrid, going to Barcelona and then going north through Girona, into southern France, west to San Sebastian and then fly out of Madrid again. I thought it would be best not to rent a car until we are leaving Barcelona, but then I would need to return it to Madrid. Does anyone know if picking up and dropping off a rental in two different cities will be excessively expensive? The car rental sites say extra charges will apply, but don't specify how much. Would it be better to pick up and drop off in Madrid, even if that meant having to bring a car to Barcelona?

I have done this many times in Spain and never paid an additional fee.
