Spain, best travel route between Madrid & Barcelona?

We will be in Spain In mid-November. Trying to figure out the most efficient route between Madrid and Barcelona. All modes are fine with us and we are comfortable with public transportation. My husband thinks flying would be the most efficient way. Counting the time getting to and from airports and flight time, is this really the better option?

What would be the benefit if we drove (interesting stops)? Or just rent a car in either city to travel a bit outside the city itself.

We also plan to visit Toledo and I see there are lots of postings here about that, as well as all manner of recommendations for visiting the two cities.

The absolute most effecient way would be to take the high speed Ave Train from city center to city center in 2h 30 mins. Great discounts if you buy tickets in advance at renfe.com.

I agree with Kimhe. City to city without wasting time at airports. With a few notable exceptions, it is not the most interesting route to drive.

There is considerable and reliable public transportation from Madrid to Toledo.

Without question, THE TRAIN !!!!

flying is only more efficient if there isn't a high speed train, for distances like that.

For a drive, you can enjoy Pilar in Zaragoza. Or, maybe Alcalá de Henares(World Heritage) and Sigüenza(Cathedral). In a different route, Cuenca and Teruel are also World Heritage sites.
