southern spain need help
 

we were wanting to go to southern spain during spring break. we go to europe each year and like places with history we are not to much into commercialized beach resorts. are their any places with history and cobblestone streets in this part of spain or is all beaches. to give you an idea we went to dordogone( sarlat) tuscany and loved these mediavel villages. with town squares. need help

Southern Spain is a big area and way more than beaches. Not sure how big a place you are thinking of, or for how long, but perhaps consider Seville. Or combine Seville with Granada or Cordoba? From Seville, which is gorgeous, you can take day trips to places like Ronda.

For cobbled streets and history and significantly sized places, to me Seville and Granada would fit the bill. Stay in the old areas of both.

Seville and Granada and the white villages are lovely, just what you describe that you like. It isn't quite south, but you can't beat Toledo for history, beautiful architecture and a cathedral that is simply amazing. Segovia has a wonderful central plaza, cathedral and castle. Many cities & towns have beautiful central plazas and narrow cobbled streets. I think they are as pretty as Tuscan villages. There are also plenty of small towns with beautiful beaches that are not resorts.

What research have you done on southern Spain? As already pointed out, southern Spain covers a lot of ground. You might want to start your research by visiting the Tourist Office of Spain (http://www.spain.info/Tourspain/?language=en).

Stick with the Andalusia region. You won't be disappointed. Skip the coast.

I'd be curious to know when is your spring break and for how long? This would weigh into my decision on where to visit. You may very well be in Spain during Semana Santa (Holy Week).

As for skipping the coast I would agree that the Costa del Sol isn't my cup of tea. However, the Costa del Luz is quite nice - not at all the built up beach resorts.
