We carry a Visa, an AMEX and an ATM card. We were able, online, to easily get PIN numbers for each of them because of our concern from getting denied that time for rail tickets. Whether having those pins actually makes a difference I don’t know, but, other than at ATM machines, I don’t think we needed them. I guess, they would allow us to use them, as a backup to our debit card, to get cash at an ATM machine. I went back and looked at our credit card statements and used them more than I remembered. Upon reflection, others in line did not have to sign their names, but those processing our cards always had to get our signature. And, they sometimes acted (not in an annoyed way) surprised when they saw they needed to get our signature, often not having a pen handy. For example, in a grocery stores used mostly by locals. So, for the most part, I believe our cards worked almost everywhere with just the chip and signature.

I do think I might visit Nora before picking up my car, as it looks like it would be on a bus route. I went to the link you gave, but part of it does not translate to English, and I admit I cannot figure out how to nail down an effective trip to and from Nora (from Cagliari), starting between 7:30-9:00am and returning maybe around 3:00-5:00pm. Can you help me with that?

Thanks you, neckervd! What do I click on for the return trip? And are there any express buses? Looks like it's a 1.5hr trip at minimum?

I’ve been Sardinia six times and covered most of island.

The only areas which have any amounts of traffic are the small cities of Cagliari and Alghero. There’s also a little more traffic around Porto Torres and the ferry terminal but other than that, as Whitehall has posted, the roads are usually deserted outside the months of July and August.

Generally, the driving for non locals must be some of the easiest in Europe and I’ve driven in 80% of European countries.

There is a very large however.

Like many Italians, Sardinians love the beach. After prolonged periods of poor weather, on the first good day, especially at the weekend, there can be a mass migration out of the city and to the beach. This can be a huge issue on the South coast. Twice we have been stuck in traffic unlike we have seen anywhere else in the world. Four hours to travel 15 miles, which is caused by the geography of the coastal road system.

Of the sites, there are many, many Nuraghi some which date from 2000BC. They are quite basic in their form and many are difficult to distinguish from the local morphology. The items we visited had no interpretative aids.

Nora has small areas of pre Roman but mainly Roman remains including a small amphitheatre and a large area of surviving mosaic floor. The museum was closed on the Sunday and I do remember the road down to the site being fairly rough.

On the West coast, Tharros is a huge rambling site on a number of hill sides. There isn’t much left standing big this is just indicative of the fact that buildings haven’t been artificially reconstructed as at other sites. The site exhibits habitation from Nuraghe times around 2000BC, through
Phoenician and Punic times then large areas of Roman buildings. From memory, I think the site was destroyed by Saracens prior to the first Crusade.

There’s amazing fish restaurant on the edge of the lagoon, just before you leave the plain heading from Cagliari to Nora.

Should that be a joke? Carnival is over!
If you had loaedd down the timetables, you would have seen that they include both directions (of course!) and that the journey lasts 50 min.

Very encouraging post, BritishCaicos!--I appreciate your taking the time, and found it quite helpful. I would never have anticipated such an agonizing experience as the beach traffic, and will definitely plan accordingly! Can you remember the name of the restaurant, or narrow down its location? (It may be perfectly obvious from your description, but having never been there before, it's hard to tell).

The restaurant is Sa Cardiga and is th second building on the sea as you leave the lagoon on the highway. There is a long stretch of lagoon on the right as you leave Cagliari to the West and the sea is on the right.

We have encountered the beach rush before. The highway heading west past Pisa can have legendary traffic jams as all of Florence and Pisa head for the coast.

Sardinia is an uncomplicated stunningly beautiful island. It doesn’t have the food scene, quality of wine or architecture of Sicily but it is much less visited and dig deeper, you find some fascinating places like Ingatursu and into disused mining towns and the huge nearby dunes.

Most of the coastal environment is amongst the most impressive in Europe.

Thanks again, BritishCaicos. I will definitely look for it.
To you and anyone else---For a first-time visitor and driver in Sardinia, is the drive from a hotel near the train station in Cagliari to Nora one that will be difficult to navigate on my own? The Google directions are a bit daunting.

We came into Cagliari from Nora one day, and the first 90% of the trip was very easy and direct. We arrived in the outskirts of Cagliari, which is a fairly large city, during rush hour. One of the bridges was closed due to some damage from an accident the day before. We did some sitting in traffic, but we just followed the detoured traffic and eventually made it in. We found going out of the city was easy, but it seemed easy to miss the correct exit going back in. Our google voice directions might still say something like 100 meters when you are at the correct exit. I just recommend taking it slow upon return and relax. Twice we simply had to take a further exit and just loop back.

Whitehall, if you're still listening....I have never used audio directions while driving. Makes me crazy, actually. But I think I may want that option in a couple of places on my journey here. Can you tell me or give me a link that explains how to set up/download the maps with offline audio capability? Sorry, but when I go to Google Maps on my iphone, it just doesn't seem obvious to me. TIA!

Here are two links:
https://www.androidauthority.com/goo...ndroid-637359/
https://www.cultofmac.com/414627/how...iphone-how-to/

Download with wifi just before you travel. They will be automatically deleted in 30 days. If you need longer than that, simply push update option next to map when you have wifi at the hotel and it will re-start your 30 days. It does take a little time. And, make sure your phone is fully charged before you set out; it seems like sometimes we have difficulty getting voice directions when we plug into the USB charger in the rental car. Might be trying to connect with car's blue tooth, which we avoid, since we have read that there may be some security concerns doing that. We do take lots of photos with our iPhone, so we bring a couple small portable chargers for an occasional extra boost.

Hi PLR
Have you been already in Sardinia?

I am going on SEP 4..and forgot to post questions here
My plan is to arrive at Olbia. take a bus to La Caletta (down south) just to do the next day, the Imperatrice cruise that goes to Cala Luna and Cala Gonoritze
back from the cruise will head north to Santa Teresa di Gallura, the ferry to Corsica leaves from that port and will do a rigid boat cruise around La Maddalena
and instead of taking the ferry to Corsica I am doing it on a rigid boat that takes you to the beaches surrounding Corsica and gives us time to visit Bonifacio
There is a cruise (day trips) leaving from Stintino to Asinara..for snorkelling and swimming with dolphins
If you were already there can u give me some feedback? I am not renting a car..will use the public bus.
I have 1 day to visit the Neptune cave near Alghero.. which is like a 3hours drive from Sta Teresa.
Thank you for your time and feedback and enjoy your trip!
cheers, Dolores from Argentina

HI PLR
Yes everybody seems to have been in Alghero and Cagliari but no one has visited La Maddalena, nor Stintino, nor even the Calas on the mid east!!..
As I dont rent a car I am doing small day cruises even to Corsica and getting from one place to other by public bus.
A friend travel agent told me not to go to Alghero and stay on the Palau,Olbia, and famous Porto Cervo area.
Did you go the the Neptune caves near Alghero?
Did you travel with public buses?
Is there a local kind of Uber or blablacar?
Or take a ride?
Thank you.
Dolores

Sorry, Doloresmercado--As I said, I can't help you with this since I did not do the regions you are planning. Hope someone else can chime in, but otherwise consider starting a new thread for your own itinerary. Hope you have a great trip!!
