Southern Europe Road Trip
Hi
My wife and I are planning a trip next September October from Cherbourg down to the South of France and Island hop by car over to Corsica on to Sardinia and then on to Sardinia. We would the travel on to mainland Italy and home. We are traveling in an estate purchased for the trip and travelling with a couple of dogs. Very excited about the trip and before we get to deep into the planning would welcome any suggestions on the practicalities in particular. Many Thanks John & Angela |
Welcome to Fodors. We moved your topic to the Europe Forum and tagged it for France and Italy

It's perfectly feasible.
Sardinia bound ferreis start from Barcelona, Toulon, Genoa, Livorno, Piombino, Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo Corsica bound ferries start from Marseille, Toulon, Nice, Savona, Genoa, Livorno. Inter-Island ferreis Bonifacio - Santa Teresa (several times daily) plus Sardinia ferries from Portovecchio to either Portotorres or Golfo Aranci (not daily). |

Many Thanks, I will do some research which is the better route over from France to Corsica
|
yes sorry
|
Yes Corsica-Sardinia-Sicily
Thanks |
The trip sounds pretty exciting. I'm sure you already know that most ferries from the mainland to Corsica leave from Marseille, which is one of my favorite cities but which is unjustly maligned by many of the French.

Do you plan to sleep in the car? If so, do you have a listing of campgrounds to cover your trip? If not, do you have a list of dog friendly hotels?
|
Yes, there ae some ferries from Marseille to Corsica, but all other itineraries are shorter and often cheaper and more frequent.
The (rather old and not extremely comfortable) Cagliari - Palermo overnight ferry runs only once or twice weekly. The same ferry goes to Naples too (same frequence). It might be easier to cross to Civitavecchia and to drive to Sicily on the motorway. |
