South of Rome
We will be in Rome in March and want to do a day trip to Pompei and also really want to see Positano. Any recommendations for either a tour or private driver for this excursion?

I've done this drive a lot...it is a GOOD 3 1/2 hours if no traffic or getting lost.
I REALLY think that going down to see Pompeii and Positano is next to impossible as a day trip!! Maybe you should consider staying somewhere further south for a night? if not, you will have to pick one or the other...just no way to fit all that in in a day and make it back to Rome.

hi, amywiss,
how long will you be in Rome?
if a week or longer, you could do an overnight "day trip"; if less than week, there is so much to do in and around Rome, why spend your precious time going to Pompeii and back?
a good 1/2+ day trip is ostia antica - the ruined port of ancient Rome. it's very interesting and easy to get to.
Unless you think that you'll never return to Italy and thus have no other chance to spend time in the pompeii area, why not leave it til another time?
regards, ann

Hi Amy - There are no Rome tour companies which offer Pompeii + Positano as a day-trip.
It is viable (- by public transport or with a driver) - if you don't mind a very long day ( 12 hrs +).
You'd need to make an early start ...

We will be in Florence for four days and then Rome for four days. Instead of Positano, would there be any other suggestions to someplace along the coast with the interesting looking buildings built into the hill like that? Pictures of Positano have always intrigued us. We do plan on getting a car either one or two days while staying in Florence. Thanks for your input.

Positano is lovely and if you can spare one night (take it from Florence imho), you can visit both Pompeii and Positano, then return to Rome. But I don't see how you could do it one day without spending the night. 3 nights in Florence, 3 nights in Rome, 1 night in Positano (with a half-day stop in Pompeii), then another night in Rome (if that's where you're leaving from).
