South Germany Itineary
Hello All,
I will be travelling to Germany for 6 nights in the end of September. Would like to do Munich, Oktoberfest and see some scenic south germany. Would request comments on the following itineary: 1. Arrive at Frankfurt and proceed to Munich 2. 2 nights at Munich (1 for city and 1 for oktoberfest) 3. 1 night at Neuschwanstein Castle (or something closeby). I believe this is same as Romantic road. 4. 2 night in black forest (Baden Baden or Freiburg or Schiltach or offenburg) 5. 1 night in heidelberg Thanks in advance. Ashish |
Are you then flying out of Frankfurt on Day 6?
Plug in some realistic travel times (bahn.de) to see if you are leaving yourself enough time to accomplish what you want. |
Hello Ashish. Why not fly into Munich? It's an easy train ride from the airport to the city, but not a quick drive from Frankfurt. If you're going for Oktoberfest, make sure you have reservations; everything could be booked already. You might want to to stay outside of Munich and take the train in. You can use the train schedules to determine a good close town. I haven't been to the Black Forest yet, but am told that Freiburg is absolutely fantastic. Six days is not a long time, so you might want to leave out Heidelberg. The castle is interesting but friends here have told me it is otherwise not all that much to see. I really liked Munich, particularly Englischer Garten. Have a great trip.

Bigtyke, Shanna - Thanks for the reply.
I am flying from India so frankfurt offers more connections compared to munich. So I will be arriving in Frankfurt early morning (8AM) and plan to take train to Munich. What I would want more information is the things to do in blackforest and must see places. I intend to pick a car from munich and drop it back in frankfurt travelling via blackforest / heidelberg. I have a flight to US early morning from frankfurt on the last day. Thanks, Ashish |

Oh yes, the Weis church is really beautiful. Just sitting out in the field on the little knoll.

Ashish-
Personally I would substitute Rothenburg and Wurtzburg for the Black Forest. The driving time from Fussen (Neuschwanstein Castle ) is much shorter and you would have time to visit the Weis Church and Schloss Linderhof on the drive to Rothenburg. Just a thought... Enjoy the 'Fest...But don't drive that day... |
Make hotel reservations for Munich yesterday

With just 6 nights you are traveling too much.
"What I would want more information is the things to do in blackforest and must see places. I intend to pick a car from munich and drop it back in frankfurt travelling via blackforest / heidelberg." It seems unwise to plan travel to places where you aren't sure what to see and do, especially to a place as distant as the Black Forest. I think it would be wiser to visit places that are roughly between Frankfurt and Munich. There are MANY nice towns and cities. Rothenburg (very heavy with tourists) and Würzburg, which Travelforbeer suggests, are very worthwhile Romantic Road towns. The Residenz Palace in Würzburg is especially impressive. There are other places nearby that you would probably like too. Just outside Würzburg is the attractive old-world town of Iphofen: http://h11.abload.de/img/04img_3169tm42.jpg Bamberg has a fantastically-preserved old town: http://www.medienwerkstatt-online.de...der/5798-1.jpg http://www.abacho.de/wp-content/gall...g-altstadt.jpg Nuremberg is great too and has some intersting history All of these places are in an area of Bavaria known as Franconia, roughly half way between Frankfurt and Munich. I would suggest spending 3 nights in the Munich/Füssen area and 3 in Franconia. If you stay in Würzburg, trips to the other Franconian towns are easy by train. In fact, ALL these destinations are easy to reach by train. You wouldn't need to rent a car at all. Daypasses for travel within Bavaria (all the above destinations are in Bavaria) are 22€/day for one traveler (the following page has old prices): http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm It is possible to reach FRA by train from Würzburg in 80 minutes by direct train. |
