Sound of Music tour

What sights are on the Sound of Music Tour. We'd love to see some of them, but the tour is too expensive for our family of five.

I thought most of the film was set on a stage, but some of it is in Salzburg. Why not rent the film and take notes to what you want to see. I wonder if some fan website gives clues.

Sound of Music sights:

1. The little church where they were married is outside of Salzburg in the Chiemsee (sp).

2. The house is very near Salzburg and is now an international language school.

3. The gazebo is very small and is located at a castle near Salzburg where water tricks are prevalant, and I cannot recall the name of the caslt, sorry.

4. The Abey is located right down formt he Hohensalzburg but was not used in the filming.

5. Where they hid in the cemetary is right beside the Hohensalzburg and I beleieve it si St. Peters. Some very old graves in there.

US

The gazebo is at: HELLBRUNN CASTLE. You can get there by a city bus. This was not the location filmed. The gazebo got moved to the present location so people can get there without trespassing.

MIRABELL GARDENS right in the middle of the city is one of the locations in Do-Re-Mi.

You can find few more names of the locations at a web site such as:
http://www.panoramatours.at/en/city-country.htm

Actually, the wedding chapel is on Mondsee. It is a shame you cannot drive the region--it is fantastic.

Please don't feel like you are missing anything by not going on the Sound of Money tour. It is one of the few egregious ripoffs I have found in Europe. It was awful, terrible bad.
I will not go into detail, but suffice it to say you can do it all on your on, with the possible exception of Mondsee.

There are buses to Mondsee, but I am not up on the bus schedules.

Schloss Hellbrunn can be reached by a city bus from the city center, #55 if I recall correctly. It is located about 4 miles to the south as I recall.
The garden with the water fountains that can squirt people is a fun thing to do on a warm day, or a rainy day when you are wet anyhow. The castle inside is worth seeing as well.

The church in Mondsee is attractive enough, but there are several in Salzburg that are just as nice if not nicer.

Some of the set for the movie is private property, and you are not allowed in. All we did was ride by, and see it in passing. Big deal.

There is plenty to see in Salzburg, and the Salzburgers could care less about the Sound of Music, except that they make money off of it.
The Sound of Music was the reason we went to Salzburg...the movie means a lot to my family. First thing we did was pick up a brochure from the tour, then did the sights ourselves. We had a rental car, and weren't particularly interested in being stuck on a bus. Mirabell Gardens is beautiful, and right in the middle of town. Hellbrun Castle is wonderful. We didn't have time to make it to Mondsee (next trip!), but did get to St. Gilgen, which is where (or near where) many of the scenic shots were filmed. The countryside is beautiful, and Dad and I enjoyed recognizing places from the movie.

The cemetary "inspired" the scene...you can kind of see where they got it from, but don't expect to find a cemetary just like the one in the Abbey from the movie.

We did go to a "Sound of Music" dinner in town...very decent meal...good singers...sang lots of songs from the show. Hokey, of course, but we loved it!

Enjoy your trip!

Anne

I have to admit that despite it being somewhat campy, I very much enjoyed the Sound of Music tour. Our guide was delightful and had a lot of great inside info. about the film. Although we had already driven quite a bit in the area, one really can't get too much of the scenery around Salzburg. For fans of the movie, I definitely recommend the tour.

If we had not gone on this tour and taken photos, I do not believe our three year old grand daughter would have forgiven us. Her favorite song is "Doe aDeer" as she calls it. Truly, we took the trip to tell her all about it. We even found a dress for her at St. Gilgen.

Bob Brown, you must not be from the U.S. and don't understand the significance of this movie to many Americans! It has everything an American could want - lots of kids, singing nuns, evil European aristocrats - and in the end the Nazis lose and the good guys get away to come to America to start over. A classic.

Don't let the "intelligentsia" on this forum tell you what you should or shouldn't see. My family and I greatly enjoyed the Sound of Music Tour. In fact we've taken it twice and on our last visit knew it well enough to drive it on our own. It is abit overpriced, but hey, you're on vacation. Ironically, the tour company is called "Bob's Sound of Music Tours".

See: http://www.bobstours.com/

We took the tour and enjoyed it. A bit "hokey", but joined in the sing along with everyone else.

The scenery was incredible and the information provided was interesting.

In addition to the SoM, the group stopped at one of those bobsled runs of conrete and sleds with wheels and that was fun...let the 48 year old kid in me have a great tme. Went down about a dozen times!

US
