Rex: Thanks so much for the link to Art's trip report. Gave me goose bumps re-living our trip. You are truly a good person.

Alya,
That's a wonderful idea! Let us know what his son requests.

I got this within an email from Wesley Hussey just recently:

Dear Kavita,
Thank you so much for your email. I appreciate your
condolences, and the wonderful things you said about my father. My
father loved the friendships he made on the boards, and I can see
why.
I mentioned in an earlier email today:

>My father loved his experiences at Kent's Hill, a preparatory high
>school in Maine. His own father died when he was very young, and my
>father felt very driftless in his early years. He found stability
>and a purpose at Kent's Hill, and would often talk fondly about his
>time there. I know he would be honored if other teens were able to
>attend the school due to an increase in school financial aid. But
>really, he would just be honored at the outpouring of emotions from
>his friends.

Best,
Wesley

Art spent some time in the Portland's veterans hospital, maybe donations can be sent there?

What a sad day. I really did not see this coming. I also had the pleasure of meeting Art, and those others of you who did will remember that he was physically a tall, strong man. In spite of his issues the last year or so, I really didn't consider that he wouldn't hit the road again sometime soon.

He loved this community, and as you can see, had personal connections with so many of us. That meant a lot to him.

When I first discovered this forum and became a regular visitor over four years ago, I quickly learned that Art Hussey was one of the regular contributors who not only offered great tips and advice, but who wrote with style, enthusiasm and panache.

Art, your family has my prayers and you have my thanks.

So sorry to hear such sad news, if I may add my condolences to Art's family.

Rex, thank you for posting the news.

Life is unpredictable, to the memory of Art, wish you all enjoy travel whenever, wherever possible.

As we get ready to celebrate our daughter's wedding today, we are quickly reminded of the cycle of life.

I've had the great pleasure of reading many of Art's postings and simply state he was a gentleman and pro.

May he now find eternal happiness.

Where Art travels now, there are no lineups at immigration or 12 hours in coach.

Topping, for anyone who'd like to know about making a memorial contribution in memory of Art.

I received this very nice e-mail from his son, Wesley:

Dear Kathy,
Thank you so much for your kind words about my father. It is always nice to hear how my father touched others' lives. Your brother-in-law was a godsend. Without him, my father would have been stuck in limbo for months.
I don't plan on holding a service or memorial for my father. He didn't know many people in Portland, and even in Los Angeles, where he lived most of his life, most of his friends were of the online variety. My dad's family in Maine will probably hold a service next month or so. My dad wanted to be cremated, and his ashes shot into space. There is a company in Texas that does that, so I'll be sending part of my father's remains there, and part will be placed in a National Cemetery. Since the federal cemetery in LA is full, I was thinking of having his remains placed in Hawaii. No good reason, but it seems nice for my father to have two more trips before he leaves.
Thanks again.

Best,
Wesley

So you see, one of our favorite travelers still has two more trips ahead of him. How wonderful that his son knew of Art's love of travel so well that he'd plan his last two trips for him. Art, my late friend, safe and happy travels until we meet again!

Bookie, that really is an appropriate send off for his father. Wesley clearly understood his father's passions well.

And you know how true it is that your intervention in having your brother build the ramps for Art's house in order to allow him to leave hospital much earlier was definitely a huge boost to Art when he was going through some of his toughest times. It was then and remains now a testament to the power of friendship and caring.

To update my earlier post, Kent's Hill school are more than happy to accept donations to their alumni scholarship fund in Art's name/ memory and donations can be made via their website, above.

I missed this the first time.

Sorry to hear about Art. Though I only knew him from this forum, his spirit was boundless.

I remember reading about how he was going to travel the US and Canada in an RV. Sort-of expected him to show in Durham sooner or later.

With his ashes going into space, he'll be able to see the whole world at one time.

Sally,

It would be fitting to include Ed's picture with the other three. I have tried using the wayback machine, but even thogh there are 75 hits on twenj.com I haven't found any pages with pitures, so far. Does anybody have one without having to ask Julie?

I was traveling for a few weeks and missed this news until just now.

Art was gentleman. I first met him when I was staying in LA for a month a few years ago and he emailed me (in the days when I attached my email address to my posts) to invite me to a Fodorite gathering at his house. So kind. He will be missed.

Rex -- I think there was one someplace there -- let me know if you find it!

He was the first of us to go [that we knew about] and I was just feeling my way with how to do it.

If anyone has a small poem they think would be appropriate for Art please email to me: shrimp56athotmail.com
