Hi, I am staying 2 days and 1 night in either sorrento or positano in July. I was wondering which one is better in regards to the scenery, relaxing beaches, and villages. I know sorrento is more fishing rather than relaxing beaches, but if we do decide to stay there, what is the commute to positano and amalfi. And if we stay in positano, how would we get to amalfi, and what is there to do in both. I'm a first timer so any advice and tips on what to do would be great thanks

Before you get chewed for double posting about the same thing expecting a different answer, I will answer while I am having my breakfast coffee from Sorrento.

From Sorrento to Positano is about 40 mins on a ferry from Marina Piccola, to Amalfi a little longer, depending if you take a hydrofoil or regular ferry. You can also take a bus, if you aren't faint of heart, the bus will take you from Sorrento all the way to Positano on small high windy road, Ravello, Amalfi, etc. But, it's a hairy drive with sometimes the tail of the bus looking like it's hanging out of the road on the cliff it gets high really fast, from sea level to 500 mts easyly. We've done both ways in our 3 years here, so we don't repeat and take ferry, unless we want adrenaline rush.

If you stayed in Positanto to Amalfi you can take Ferry or Bus, depending where you stay in Positano as it's a terrace kind of town. If you are top or middle of town where most hotels or apt are, makes more sense to take the Bus, than coming down to the port to take the ferry. Positano is really charming and magical at night, with all the lights against the black background, but it's also a small town.

As I mentioned again, for just 1 night and 2 days, I would forget the beaches (non sandy beaches) and take the bus or ferry and discover all the towns, that's the only time you will have to discover. For Capri you will need an entire 2nd day as you arrive to Capri by ferry and then take a bus to Anacapri, etc where you can do hikes and go to the small beaches, etc.

Not sure how you can actually have 2 days if you have only 2 nights, but you can get to Amalfi by bus or boat from Positano. What kind of beaches are you looking for? While there are a few very small sandy beaches, the AC is not known for beaches. Their beaches are mostly pebbles or rocks, sometimes with piers for sunbathing extending out into the ocean.

pookymimi, thanks for giving us the information about the ferries from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi. We will be spending 4-5 nights in Sorrento in October, and will have a car that we do NOT plan to drive across to Positano! We are using the car for day trips to Pompeii and Naples.

Don't know why you would want a car in Sorrento to visit Pompeii and Naples, when both are easily accessible via Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento.
