Sorrento vs. Positano
I've just started prelimary planning for a proposed trip to the Amalfi Coast next May. After reviewing several old posts and after skimming some other materila, I've narrowed down the primary location to either Sorrento or Positano. i was wondering if anyone would like to give me their pros and cons of these two spots. We will probably stay for 6 to 7 days. We'd like to stay in one place (as opposed to moving around). We don't want to be in someplace that is simply crawling with tourists (hence, early May for time of trip). Any tips, suggestions, thoughts, asides, jokes, recipes, remedies, etc. will be appreciated! |

Hi J,
I suggest Praiano. See my trip report for details. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34451044 ((I)) |
What do you plan to do during your 6-7 days? Relax and explore the towns along the Amalfi Coast? -OR- See Pompei, Capri, Naples and the archeological museum, Vesuvius and exlore the towns along the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula? If the former, stay in Positano. If the latter, stay in Sorrento. Both are tourist destinations. Both will have tourists.

I think Jean has hit it on the head - Positano a more dreamy town, Sorrento, not nearly so romantic but much better situated for Capri, Ischia or Pompeii excursions and also along Amalfi Coast.

All the posts above are correct. Positano more romantic; Sorrento more practical; and we enjoyed staying in Praiano. You can also do what we did - 3 days in Sorrento and 3 days in Praiano (substitute Positano or Amalfi).
