Sorrento vrs. Naples as a base

Hi....my wife and I will be traveling to the Naples - Sorrento area for nine days in March of 2003. Since we won't have a car at this point in our journey, are there any thoughts about whether Naples or Sorrento would be a better home base for exploring Capri, Ischia, Pompeii etc. along the coast? I understand bus and train travel is the only way to go, but would be delighted to hear any suggestions....

Many Thanks in Advance.....Sam & Betty

Been to Naples for about 1 hour. We went to Capri from there. Naples is a big city and very crowded. That's all I experienced. Sorrento is easier to manage and absolutely beautiful. We loved it there. Stayed at Hotel Tonerella (I may have spelled this incorrectly-Tonorella??)which had a beautiful view of the Bay of Napoli and delicious food. Sorrento and Naples have equal and easy access to the islands and Pompeii. While you are in that area, I'd recommend a visit to the Amalfi coast.

Sorrento is a much prettier town, in my opinion, and would suggest that as a base! I loved it there. However, I'm not sure the trains go from there...try the Trenitalia website for stations, or I'm sure someone here as better info.

You'll love Italy! Have fun!

Doesn't Naples appear on the ugliest(or something like that) thread?

SORRENTO!!!!

SORRENTO. Naples is interesting to see for the afternoon, but I don't think you would want to stay there. We stayed in Sorrento at Il Nido, very reasonable, GOOD restaurant. They will take you into town in their bus, and can probably help you with all your planning.. VERY accomodating. Check out their WEB site. Tons of positive feedback. Also very centrally located to all the places you are wanting to go.
Have fun. Helaine

If you're feeling adventurous and want to experience a very intense slice of urban life in Italy, then Naples.

Otherwise, definitely Sorrento.
