sorrento to positano (day trip)
hi - just wondering what the best way for four of us (no car)could get to see positano from sorrento? we have one day free to travel down the amalfi coast (we will have already done capri, pompeii, naples & sorrento). should we take a hydrofoil and make stops at other towns along the way? or should we take a bus/train? and what time would we have to leave any of these places not to be stranded? thanks for all you help!

Blkpa - I would do a mix of bus and hydroil/ferry depending on your timing.
You can find hydrofoil timetables to/from Sorrento on: http://www.metrodelmare.com/l-mm3_b.html For ferry times between Positano and Amalfi go to: http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr...i/costiera.asp You can find bus times SORRENTO-POSITANO-AMALFI (- and vice-versa) on: http://www.sita-on-line.it/costiera%...na/Q.%2014.pdf For bus timetables between AMALFI and RAVELLO go to: http://www.sita-on-line.it/costiera%...na/Q.%2015.pdf Hope this helps ... There are 2 boat companies in Sorrento that will give you an 8 hr. ferry ride for about 25 euros to Capri (for a quick swim),and either Positano(for 3 hrs if you choose to get off) or Amalfi before returning. We spent a week on the AC and used the Sita buses to get between towns but if you only have 1 day this quick tour might work for you. We loved each of these towns and Ravello as well but since you only have 1 day you don't have much choice. Positano was the most picturesque. Enjoy

Hi aneckc<
Can you provide the names/websites of those 2 ferry tour operators that you mentioned in your post? We're going there next month. Thank you. |
If you do take the bus from Sorrento, don't forget to sit on the RIGHT side for the best views. Not sure about the hydrofoil but when we got to Positano by bus, the return by boat was cancelled because of high seas. Thus surprised us. We found the bus very convenient.

If you only have the one day for such a side trip, I would go for the Capri/Positano hired ferry mentioned above, which gives you both another hillside wonder along the coast and the island.
But if the day trip's choice is between Positano and Amalfi, I'd choose Positano. But then, if Positano were up against any other option anywhere in my mind about now, I'd choose Positano. Stayed there four nights last year and have beautiful memories of looking up to it from the colorul harbor and down upon it from our terrace. |
Blkpa - You say you will have already done Capri - so if you have a whole day for the Amalfi Coast personally I'd plan on doing Positano, Ravello and Amalfi.
You could easily spend a relaxing day just in Positano - but it would be a pity not to see the others too - especially Ravello. Here's how I'd probably do it: - Bus Sorrento-Positano (- sit on the right as Alan says for best views). - Ferry Positano-Amalfi. - Bus Amalfi-Ravello and back. You could then return to Sorrento by hydrofoil or bus from Amalfi. Hope this helps ... Steve |
Hi Taylor_Made: There were several tour companies in town offering this 8 hr. cruise although we only found one that accepted our AMEX card. The others wanted euros. The other option I believe is to just go down to the Marina and sign up for the cruise there. The boats were mostly filled up with Italians; many brought their own lunches or ate on the boat's cafeteria. Be sure to bring your swimsuits for the swim off Capri. The boat travels past the Faraglioni rocks as well. There are fresh water showers to clean off after your swim.
After Capri, the boat stops in Positano for those who want to get off(about a 3 hr. stop) and continues on to Amalfi for another 3 hrs. Too short a time for a side trip to Ravello though. It doesn't give you much of an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the Amalfi Coast but if you only have one day, I think this is a great and relatively reasonable option to see the area. It's all good!!! BTW, we also traveled along the coast by the SITA buses which were cheap, A/C'd, and convenient. If you got a really early start you might make it to all of these towns but it would be long day. |
Taylor - Here's the website for the 'Marine Club' - which does day-cruises from Sorrento to:
- Capri/Amalfi Coast ('blue cruise') - Ischia/Procida ('green cruise') http://www.marineclub.it/frame-ita.html Hope this helps ... Steve |
