Sorrento to Positano

Hi Everyone--

I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Sorrento to Positano and the most cost efficient way.

There are 3 of us traveling together. I have noticed on this site that the SITA bus goes from Sorrento to Positano. I am having a hard time figuring out the SITA website...does anyone know how much the bus ride would cost per person?

Also does anyone know how much it would cost to hire a private car to take 3 people from Sorrento to Positano?

Thank you!!

We used from Naples to Positano and they were great. I think it was about €120 for 6 in 2007.

The bus is very cheap, a few euros each.

The bus is a couple of Euros each way.

Depending upon when you're going you can take a boat. They start to run around mid-May.

I think the bus runs at least hourly if not more often. You can check at the commuter train station in Sorrento. That's where the bus leaves.

Abiut the bus. These drivers think the only way to drive is with one foot on the gas and the other on the breaks. They think they have to floor the gas to go a block and then slam on the breaks to slow down to make a turn. You need a strong stomach for the ride.

Hubby and I were just there last September and visited the entire Amalfi Coast. We were visiting relatives and had the luxury of them driving us for the beautiful ride on the coast. I am not sure of the exact cost of a taxi...but it is not that bad and is totally worth it. I would NEVER take the bus. The bus is really going to limit you on your views and I cannot imagine being on a bus for the winding roads. Along the way, you are going to want to stop and see the view and take pictures (even if you are not a big picture person) and a taxi will allow you to do that. Trust me...we stopped many times. If you have the time...try to get to Ravello. Ravello is a little town high up on a hill/mountain between Positano and Amalfi. It is really beautiful and definitely worth visiting. There are two Villas up is called Villa Cimbrone ( and the views are amazing. Have fun!

Hi ros,

>....the best way to get from Sorrento to Positano.....<

A chauffeur-driven Bentley.

If you don't have about 85E for a limo or cab, the SITA bus

Go to
Click the "Campania" link
click "Localita"
click "Sorrento"
You want the "AMALFI - POSITANO - SORRENTO" bus schedule.

Riding the bus is perfectly fine. The drivers are no more interested in a crash than you are. Besides, they know the road. Most of the other drivers don't.

Enjoy your visit.

When are you going? The boat is the best and most economical way to travel between Sorrento and Positano. Taxis can be quite expensive. Although the ride is only about 30 minutes between the two towns, it cost the two of us around $50 a few years ago.

Is it possible to go to Positano by bus from Sorrento and return by the water? I though I had seen this suggested but does anyone have specifics on the water return? Thanks!

For us, the boat was a very interesting way to see the towns on the coast. A lovely sight and great for picture taking. But we liked the bus too, squeezed in as you may be, it was fun. Richard

Absolutely possible, but keep in mind the ferry schedule changes or may be cancelled due to sea conditions.

This year, it appears the boats start running even later than usual.

If I wanted to spend the E's I would prefer a taxi - if I had large bags, again go for the taxi. But no doubt, the bus is the more frugal and an acceptable option. We will be there in mid-May. We hope to take the bus to Positano, stroll down and return by ferry - I have not yet found ferry info so I guess we will wing it. Positano is on a big hill which is why we want to go there by bus and amble down. On our first (and at that time, I thought only trip) we hired a driver for the day and it was wonderful. So wonderful, we were hooked and are now returning for our 4th visit.

Greg - did I miss the icon for english in that article? Could not discern the info I was looking for with my rudimentary Italian. Does it say when the Sorrento - Positan - Sorrento ferries will start operating.
