Sorrento to Mt Vesuvius

We are traveling to Italy in two weeks and plan to spend some time in Sorrento. One of the days there we will be going to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. Is there a train or other form of reliable public transportation from Sorrento to Mt V, Pompeii, and back to Sorrento? Or should we rent a car for that day - which we would then keep for the following day to travel the Amalfi Coast?

Thank you!

Circumvesuviana train goes from Sorrento to Pompei. Many trains every day and it takes about 30 mins. There is a bus (Vesuviana Mobilita')up the Vesuvio that leaves from Pompei. The trip up and back takes about 3 hours.

Thank you. When you say that the trip takes about 3 hours, which part are you referring to? The whole trip from Sorrento, to Pompeii, Vesuvius, and back to Sorrento?

We're hoping to go to Vesuvuis in the morning and hike to the top and then come back to Pompeii for the afternoon. Does that seem reasonable?

Thank you again for all of your help!

I think up and back on the bus from Sorrento to Mt. V.- Pompei will take a few hours (to tour) and will take about 45 mintues to/from Pompei

The bus from Pompei to Vesuvio is 1hr there, and 1 hr back. It takes about an hour to climb from where the bus stops on Vesuvio to the crater, have a look around, and walk back down. Sorrento to Pompei is 30min train trip.

sorry I clicked on post reply by accident.
It is best to climb il Vesuvio early. There is an 8am and a 9am bus from Porta Marina at the entrance to Pompei.
Always get updated timetables. You can get them at a tourist office or the train station in Sorrento.
